Product Description

CD Description

If you ever doubted the lascivious intent of Sheffield's Add N To X, the title of their third album lays it out explicitly. Coming ever closer to the ultimate biomechanical coupling of (wo)man and machine, the group verses synthesized seductions in the mechanical language of love with ripping theremin warble, live percussion, and atom-age melodies. As evidenced by the video for the fabulously cyber-sleazy single, "Metal Fingers In My Body", which features an animated nymphetand a randy robot doing the deed, it's clear that Add N To X has certain prurient amusements in mind.
AVANT HARD trots out one lewd groove after another, with a single-mindedness that makes these cybersexual pursuits entertaining ratherthan perverse. Add N To X cruises for wares on the streets of "Robot New York" and fantasises about tantric positions even the Kama Sutra must have overlooked on the aggressive "Buckminster Fuller". The down n' dirty percolations of "Fyuz"suggest that Barry Smith, Ann Shenton, and Steven Claydon all have volumes of POPULAR MECHANICS stashed under their mattresses. What a curious crew.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes My Head Hurt...(But that's why I bought it!), 5 Nov 2003

So I finally got around to buying Avant Hard. SO how do I feel now I've listened to it?! Well I feel cerebral. I feel like I've discovered something that very few people come anywhere near 'getting' let alone understanding.
Never has an album title described the content of an album like Avant Hard does. Y'see, it's like avant garde electronica/rock combo..but HARD! Oh yes! After we wander fairground-like past the child-pleasing 'Barry 7's Contraption' we run smack into 'Robot New York', breaking our noses in the process. The rolling, brooding electro basslines, the drum loops, the whirring, plinking syntho overtones...Then suddenly it's gone all funky Avengers-esque 'Skills'...Something to bounce around the room (on your own) to and pretend you're in some 80s camp-ish crime-bustin' show...And only THEN to we drive on into the real heart of the album. 'Steve's Going To Teach Himself Who's Boss', with it's jackhammer NOISE driving itself into your skull and it's more and more static-filled noise-with-a-rhythm from then on....But it WORKS! It all holds together beautifully...It's a real work of art...It's a growling thing of beauty. It demands attention and fully deserves it.
A grown-up album. A thoughtful Aston Martin of an album compared to the garish pop fare that surrounds us. Don't just play it once whatever you do. Persevere and this'll be at the top of your playlist (if you have one!) for a long time to come!

4.0 out of 5 stars Aphex twin meets Stereolab, 9 Jan 2003

I looked for this album specifically because I heard a bit of it on an Orange advert. It was what I expected and more. This is funky and hard as the title suggests and is worth getting if you like drum based rock and roll electronica with creative flair. This is sophisticated and heavy music and is not for everyone. I would have awarded five stars but some of the themes are a little repetitive. Despite this, it, along with so many other things of which you have never heard, is far superior to anything you will hear in mainstream music.

5.0 out of 5 stars The synths go bryrsyyyyysyzzzzzz, 17 Sep 2000

Pretty damn crazy stuff. Possibly the most outstandingly ROCK album never to include a guitar. First track is bizzare. The rest is merely crazy. Buy it. Laugh. Enjoy it. Brilliant.

This isn't robot music; there's too much humour, too much sly winking and creativity for this to be manufactured by a machine. Read more
