5.0 out of 5 stars This CD is certainly worth adding to your collection., 3 Dec 2000
DuPre's interpretation of Elgar's cello concerto, is still the benchmark thirty five years after her first recording of it. It is made all the more poignant, by the combination of the twenty year old Jackie's performance with the talents of Barbirolli, one of this concerto's earliest performers. Elgar's music often lends itself to the listener's involvement. Throughout this hauntingly solemn piece, Du Pre certainly draws the listener into its emotion. It may be seen as incredibly fortunate for supporters of DuPre, that the Dvorak concerto was recorded only months before her illness began to take its toll. Dvorak's stirring opening has that note of patriotism found in the works of Jean Sibelius. DuPre communicates the energy and enthusiasm of Dvorak here. As the piece begins to mellow, it easy to see how the cello concertos of these two composers complement one another. If you want a recording of purely cello music, this is indeed an inspired pair.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, 21 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Du Pre's recording of the Elgar is justifiably famous - it is the last word in this music. But the Dvorak concerto is powered by a similiar intensity. It is a massive, passionate performance in which du Pre throws in everything she has got. It is saturated with the most unbelieveable sense of commitment. There are other great recordings, perhaps better, but this is something special. Just listen to her blistering interpretation of the end of the first movement. Astonishing. Or try the wonderful slow movement. The concerto ends with that gut-wrenchingly soulful coda. I love this music and this recording. Truly one of the great pieces of 19th century music played by one of the 20th century's greatest artists.

4.0 out of 5 stars Still the one to beat, 16 Dec 2007
By Mart Music (Essex, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)

These are two wonderful recordings, both from the 1960's, and have rarely been beaten, in terms of passion and emotion, after more than 40 years of performances by other artists.

Jacqueline du Pre's Elgar cello concerto from 1965 remains the benchmark for this work and essential listening for lovers of classical music.

EMI have released this recording in many guises since its original performance, most recently on the 'Complete EMI Recordings' 17 CD box set of du Pre's works, which does offer better value so is my recommended version to buy.

A simply timeless performance.
