Yes Mott did have a number of chart hits. No they are not included on this CD. Read the album title carefully - it's the Best of the Island Years 1969-1972. The hits came later and were all on the Columbia/Sony label! What you get here is pre-Bowie influenced Mott; more hard rock than glam rock. If you have never heard early Mott than this is the place to start; a good selection at a cheap price. Beware though, this may as well have been a different band to the 'All the Young Dudes' era Mott.

Just for once, the clue is in the title. I'm not surprised none of Mott the Hoople's seven hit singles make this "best of" compilation, because with the possible exception of "All The Young Dudes", Mott's best work never went anywhere near the singles charts. None of their hits were worth a candle compared with great, albeit not particularly well-remembered tracks like "At the Crossroads" & "Thunderbuck Ram", both of which feature on this excellent collection.

If you want the singles, buy the "greatest hits" compilation instead.

This album is a steal, it sums up the pre Dudes Mott brilliantly, this for me was them at their finest. Get this and the Mojo set which covers the CBS hits era and for the price of a round of drinks you have a great introduction to one of the greatest bands ever.
The only thing to watch is that you'll then want everything they ever released!
