Product Description

From Amazon.com

Always the bridesmaid, never the bride, Christine Collister is best known for adding fire as a backup singer for Richard Thompson and as one half of a duo with Clive Gregson. Changing all that with a 1994 live album and 1996's Blue Aconite, Collister proved she deserves the spotlight. With Thompson and B.J. Cole providing support, her perfect nightclub voice adds pathos without flamboyance, tragedy without despair. She picks material with extraordinary care and the aim of an expert sportsman. Bruce Cockburn ("The Whole Night Sky"), Tom Waits ("Dirt in the Ground"), Nick Drake ("Black Eyed Dog"), Billie Holiday, Elvis Costello, and Robert Wyatt are among the featured writers. Collister gives each vocal her torchiest treatment. Most haunting is her own composition, "Always There," which uses a light sway to hide its sad truth. --Rob O'Connor

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Collister triumph, 14 Feb 2000
By Geoff Batchelor (Baildon, W Yorkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Christine Collister has one of the best voices in these islands, yet somehow no recognition. This album is even better than the stunning 'Blue Aconite' as it is more adventurous, and there's more new songs, as well as the great covers. John Surman's and Richard Thompson's virtuosity is used to good effect, but the highlight is a chilling cover of Tom Wait's 'Dirt in the Ground' with fabulous steel guitar from B J Cole. If you haven't experienced the effect of hearing the Collister voice, treat yourself now.

1.0 out of 5 stars A wave of negativity, 19 Feb 2004

..and then another wave, and then another. Poor Christine was having a bad day when she produced this album. Her voice is powerful, but the choice of songs appears to reflect a profound sense of pessimism. Music to top yourself to.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 31 May 2002
By A Customer
Collister HAD a lovely voice which could have become great with voice training but latterly it has begun to sound forced.

Many of the arrangements are maudlin. An interesting choice of material has been spoilt by overworked or prissy arrangements eg some dreadful backing vocals ruin I Want to Vanish.

Occasionally Collister still produces the fire and spirit of her work with Gregson. One star for that and one star for The Whole Night Sky and Dirt in the Ground.
