Borodin is not as well-known for his symphonies as for his Prince Igor, the most famous excerpts from that work also being available on this set. This may well be because the symphonies themselves are not particularly memorable. Very much a product of their time, they are competent enough works, but Tchaikovsky (for example) did this sort of thing so much better.

But not to worry - these are fairly good performances of all three of them (the third being unfinished), along with a raft of other works which make this CD a worthwhile buy.

So, if you are collecting symphonies from the "romantic" period, then this is as good a collection as any to get hold of. The rating reflects the fact that this CD contains the wonderful "Steppes" and "Polovtsian Dances", each of which is widely available elsewhere, but in case you don't have these pieces, then this is a good set to get.
