Clodagh Rodgers was one of the biggest stars in British music at one point. Let's face it, The Beatles were the only act to keep her debut release Come Back And Shake Me from the top spot in 1969. The Irish girl with the great legs (and the even greater voice) could sell out concert tours, showrooms and even broke Sammy Davis Jnr's box office record at the Talk Of The Town! This collection is one of two CD's released - each containing some classic Clodagh titles. Her best remembered hit Jack In The Box (our Eurovision entry for '71) is here, along with Come Back and Shake Me, Goodnight Midnight and Biljo. There are also some great covers including John Lennon's Imagine, Mr. Bojangles and the catchy Colours Are Changing. Her version of Help Me Make It Throught The Night is also very pretty. It could be argued that Clodagh's voice in it's heyday was as great as Karen Carpenter's, and one cannot help speculating that she could've been mismanaged. By the eighties she was stuck in the world of summer seasons and pantomimes. It's a great shame that my generation (18-25 year olds) have never really known her music, unless they've heard her at the theatre in Willy Russell's Blood Brothers or in the cult musical Pump Boys And Dinettes. This is a great CD to be introduced to her back catalogue of material (albeit there are one or two tracks which could've remained in the vaults at RCA - they're not exactly timeless - but then we blame her A&R men for that!) and is at a very good price. Classic Clodagh Rodgers. Judge for yourself.

It has always puzzled me why the top selling girl singer of 1969/70 hasn't had her many albums put onto cd, so this collection of Clodagh's hits and covers is a welcome addition to any collector of 'proper' pop music. There was a time when this fair colleen was never off the screens and never off the radio waves! Of course Come Back and Shake Me and Jack in the Box are probably her most remembered hits, but Goodnight Midnight and Biljo are pop gems. Clodagh is best when really punching out a number such as Help Me Make It Through The Night, about as far away from the country version as you can get, full of wah wah guitar and heady orchestrations by Keith Mansfield, and she gives it a powerhouse vocal performance more associated with the likes of Shirley Bassey! Of all the girl performers at the time Clodagh was the girl with the best voice as well as the best look! Often being compared to Karen Carpenter, her deep mezzo with a lovely shining ring in the tone is shown to good effect in numbers like Stand By Your Man (again, given a funky 60's feel) and an inspired version of Day By Day from Godspell.All in all, a good selection of tracks from her top selling albums and singles, and about time that there was the Masters Two!
