5.0 out of 5 stars A lost classic !, 9 Jul 2004
This album has been on my wishlist for a number of years now and the wait has been worth it.
Being a fan of the psychedelic Haight-Ashbury scene, I have managed to pick out some lost classics in the past such as Kak and Quicksilver to name but a few.
Curt Boetcher has here managed to create a flawless pop album in the same vein as the Beatles and the Monkees did, with elements of pop/rock/psych/folk that combine to form a sparkling album that works on any level you want it to.
It's such a shame that this is one of the most difficult albums on the face of the planet to acquire. But then again, the best ones always are!

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Brilliant Sunshine Pop, 20 Aug 2008
By N. Watts (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Begin (Audio CD)
Right here we go, my five star reviews (well who wants to review a crappy album) continue with this relatively unknown classic. Obviously these days 'classic' is a much abused word when describing albums, but no other term would be fitting for an album of this greatness.

Basically what we have here is a 'super group' made up of an amalgamation of several groups from Southern California. All seven member of the group write songs and sing on the album as well as playing a multitude of instruments. When you consider this, it is remarkable how well the 14 tracks on the album hold together.

The main man for the project was studio whiz kid Curt Boettcher who also co-produced the album with Keith Olsen. The album is quite renowned for its production in that it was one of the first albums to use sixteen track recording technology. Recorded in 1967/1968, the songs still sound fresh and sparkling.

The music is what is called these days 'sunshine pop', or to put it another way it features extensive use of vocal harmonies and lush instrumentation with a slightly psychedelic edge.

The album opens with a fairly short, sprightly instrumental ('Prelude') which features a harpsichord and tuba. What follows is a succession of 3 minute pop songs with bouncy acoustic guitars, strong baselines and sparkling candy coated vocals floating over a delicate wall of sound. If you can picture Pet Sounds (by the Beach Boys of course, come on keep up!) only in more groovy setting you won't be far off the shimmering sounds within. The great thing is there is still plenty of variation on the album; 'Sing To Me' has a strong Motown 4/4 beat to it, plus a punchy horn section; 'It's You' again has a nice drive and ends with a whooshing aircraft noise; 'Some Sunny Day' & 'It Won't Always Be The Same' are quite country influenced with some excellent steel guitar by Red Rhodes;' The Know It All' features a trumpet solo played by Hugh Masakel and 'Karmic Dream Sequence #1' is eastern influenced with a hazy guitar motif and almost chant like vocals. This is definitely the one true psychedelic track on the album.

Basically if you are a fan of Beach Boys/ Byrds/ Beatles harmony driven pop with a strong sense of melody, you will adore this album. And the great thing is that it is really accessible, yet you can still find something new or interesting with each play. The CD features two tracks intended for a second album which was sadly abandoned, plus single versions of the album tracks that are slightly different mixes. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 'sister album' to 'Present Tense' by Sagittarius, 24 May 2000
By mk.olyett@talk21.com (Watford, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Begin (Audio CD)
If ever Curt Boettcher was ripe for re-assessment this album provides the perfect endorsement. 'Begin' was groundbreaking o it's release in 1968 and still sounds contemporary and fresh. Curt Boettcher and his producing co-hort Keith Olsen surrounded themselves with some little known songwriters and session musicians and created a classic. Tracks such as 'To Claudia On A Thursday highlight beautiful vocal harmonies and arrangements. There is pure pop with 'Won't Alawys Be The Same' and ' It's You'. Although the group had the recently 16 track machinaery to work with, they never abuse the priviledge. Unfortunately there was no follow up, so we can only marvel at the magic of Curt Boettcher
