5.0 out of 5 stars One of his best., 11 Dec 2001
This review is from: Vermin in Ermine (Audio CD)
Why hasn't this album been critiqued? It's definitely one of his most hummable ones. From the 2nd track on, Hell Was Like A City, it's hard not to want to sing along to the repetitive choruses. This album is a prelude to Tears Run Rings, My Hand Over My Heart, The Desperate Hours.
The potpourri of simple instruments used casts the album as a gypsy camp, a campfire, a carnival...and perhaps that's where the magic lies.

5.0 out of 5 stars torch song culture, 22 Oct 2004
By Gisele Baxter (Vancouver, British Columbia Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In my early-80s bohemian days, when men dared to wear eyeliner and MTV was beginning its takeover, when I was discovering Life and all its possibilities and learning to write, this record, which I owned on a tape I almost wore out, was a significant part of my soundtrack. I did like Soft Cell's technogothic pulse kept visceral by Marc Almond's absinthe-and-opium vocals. This is a revelation. Musically diverse, consistently well sung, scathingly honest and Romantic in all senses of the word, it is a cry of the heart from a hell of society's manufacture, and yet there is an undeniable love of the urban environment here. This music is sensual in all senses: I've created so many films in my head to the goth-street-anthem "Gutter Hearts", to the bluesily horrific "Ugly Head" and "Solos Adultos", to the sublime "Tenderness is a Weakness", a torch song so ravishing I'm amazed scores of singers haven't lined up to cover it. Almond's misfits and runaways and rent boys and doomed lovers deserve a reintroduction; I'm appalled this is as hard to find on CD as it is. Rerelease on a major label might be a nice get-well present for Marc.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Marc's finest albums, 15 Jun 2004
This album has real heart(not just on the cover) and emotion. After the disbandment of Soft Cell and Marc & The Mambas, Marc Almond re-emerged in 1984 with this paean to the gutter and trash entitled "Vermine In Ermin", backed by the Willing Sinners. Mike Hedges production sparkles and fizzes on songs like "You Have" (listen out for Marc's breathtaking range and the length he holds a note in the middle section), "Gutterhearts", "Hell Was a City" and "Joey Demento". All of these are fast tempo numbers that carry the album along. There are darker songs such as "Shinning Sinners" and "Ugly Head" that tell great stories and paint lurid pictures. Other songs tell stories in a more opulent and dramatic fashion, namely "Tenderness Is A Weakness" and with a hint of country, so does "The Boy Who Came Back". Another standout track would be the twenties burlesque swing of "Pink Shack Blues".
With great vocal performances, blended with windswept pianos, guitars, strings and brass, this is arguably a landmark album in Almond's career.
