Product Description

CD Description
After dissolving his second power trio, Sugar, Bob Mould wrote and recorded BOB MOULD (a self-titled release sometimes referred to as HUBCAB, due to its cover art). The credits even proclaim "Bob Mould is Bob Mould", and "This one is for me". The fact that the album was written and performed by oneman, however, does not mean that this is a low-fi aberration--rather, it's a sonically dense but extremely controlled excursion, and the next logical step in his career.
Standouts include the brittle "I Hate Alternative Rock", "Egoveride", a crunching rocker featuring a wicked overdriven guitar sound, and an astonishingly bitter series of end-of-the-relationship songs. Among them are "Anymore Time Between", easily one of Mould's most painful moments, "Next Time That You Leave", a poignant, mostly restrained (except for the seething choruses) affair, and the intensely angry "Hair Stew", where the self-loathing lyrics are coloured with searing feedback squelches. With its downer lyrics, BOB MOULD is not an easy record to like; however if everyone's cathartic release was to record albums this good, the world would be a much better place.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's really 3 1/2 stars., 2 Jan 2005

As frustrating as it is at times, as immense and beautiful as it is at others i'm struggling to draw any kind of conclusion as to what i truly think of this effort.
To put things in perspective i've tried to listen to this record without too many comparisons to Mr Moulds previous efforts of genius. Yet that is somewhat a difficult task to honour completely and at times my discipline was sadly breached.

Anyway to the record.

Personally i don't think it's all together fluent and in certain areas tracks fall in to the dreaded category of album fillers. However the space between is a sign that Bob has still got something to offer with it's reverb laden guitar part and sultry mellancholic lyrics it'salmost perfection. Sadly though the i hate alternative rock track that follows somewhat numbs the brilliance established throughout the first piece. This formula follows suit constantly throughout this self titled creation release.

All in all die hard Bob fans will no doubt cling to the moments of genius that are apparent here but there is no escape from the dire album fillers that manipulate and burden this collection of no doubt archived songs that were to poor to make the grade on albums prior.

Not much here to enlighten new listeners sadly.
