Cuban pianist Rubén González has lived through this century's greatest musical windstorms, from the emergence of son to salsa to Latin Jazz and more. Born in 1919, González also retired from playing professionally years before this, his debut CD, was even recorded. He reemerged in 1996 when World Circuit stopped in Cuba to record for several days. He ended up making a thrilling debut. This impromptu CD was cut in a day, and its limber vibe shines for all its uptempo looseness. González plays a rainbow of Cuban rhythms and prods his percussionists and lone trumpeter to great depths of conversation and great heights of flash. --Andrew Bartlett

Amazing, brilliant, finger clicking magic. After the Buena Vista Social Club I didn't think it could be matched, but this has and then some. I am now going to buy everything on the World Circuit CD list. Ruben Gonzalez is a true master of his trade, and I honestly recommend any type of music lover to take a risk. Gooo aannnn!!

Ruben Gonzalez is an absolutely superb piano layer. His music always was, since the 1940's, pure afro-cuban music and he is most surely one of the greatest musicians of Cuba, playing major roles in music types like the cha cha cha, son and others. Introducing Ruben Gonzalez is his first album after the success of Buena Vista Social Club, where his simultaneously solid and soft sound is in evidence for the first time for the public outside Cuba. Don't loose this extremely well produced record, consistent, fulfilling and soft music, the very best of cuban music.

80 year old Ruben Gonzalez could barely walk onto the stage when he appeared with the Buena Vista Social Club at Hyde Park on 29 July 2000. When his fingers hit the keys of the grand piano, it was a very different story!

This album introduces you to one of the last of the best great piano performers and you are swept along by the youthful interpretations of the music that he so very much enjoys.

Ruben deserves the acclaim he's finding in his old age - just don't miss out on this wonderful collection!

This is a superb recording, no doubt, but after seeing BVSC at the Marciac Jazz Festival this summer I want to hear the new young players on record because thay are just as good.
