Product Description
Amazon.co.uk Review
If Youssou N'Dour represents the sophisticated urban edge of Senegal, electric and energetic, then Cheikh Lô is the more organic, spiritual side. Né La Thiass (which was produced by N'Dour) is a remarkable album, dreamy without ever floating away, its debts to Latin rhythms and Senegalese mbalax evident but subtle. Mostly this is the record of Lô, the writer and singer, the warmth of his voice shining through on every track--most particularly the title cut and the gorgeous "Guiss Guiss". It's music of the heart and an emotional reflection of Lô's commitment to his Massamba and Islam. The drums are the grounding rhythm while the melodies and voice soar. This album is strong enough evidence to confidently say that a new African star is born. --Chris Nickson

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant..., 3 Jun 2000
By A Customer
Well, what to say? Anybody who has heard this delightful Senegalese ripple will need absolutely no convincing as to its inherent quality. Youssou N'Dour claims that the "mbalax needs to be simplified for Western audiences" but his latest album (Joko) is not a patch on his protege's album. It bursts with life, every rhythm being implied, while the singing is explosive - an African James Brown if such a comparison is possible. To top it all, it is tremendously uplifting - this is how pop music was supposed to be. A clear case of the protege surpassing the father - vive la musique!

5.0 out of 5 stars superb musically - and spritually, 12 Sep 2006

Just over two years into this CD and it's still one that I play repeatedly - it's that good. Have since also bought Lamp Fall, and had the real pleasure to see the man live at Symphony Hall Birmingham earlier this summer. Not perhaps the best venue however, lacking the intimacy that this sublime music deserves. Well worth checking out some of the background to its origins.

4.0 out of 5 stars Patchwork is cool, 1 Sep 2003
I only gave this 4 stars because this is music driven by 5 stars spirituality (so I leave the other star for the eternal mystery)!

Spookily I put this on to listen to over coffee and battenberg.

This is complex fusion music (in its best sense) with soul. Highly recommended.
