Product Description

CD Description

Martyn Bates and Peter Becker had been recording together for two years when PALE HANDS I LOVED SO WELL and DRUMMING THE BEATING HEART, the third and fourth Eyeless In Gaza albumsrespectively, were released. Cherry Red's reissue compiles the records in reverse-chronological order, but this does little to detract from these two albums' enduring magic.
The rare HANDS is especially wondrous, witnessing the maturation of Eyeless In Gaza's gift for evocative improvisational impressionism. HEART opens with "Transcience Blues", a definitive EIG track that conjures April showers with throbbing bass, parched organ, and Bates' impassioned vocals. The organ defines the album, as Bates' singing complements the instrument's alternately sinuous ("Ill Wind Blows"), sweet ("One ByOne"), and simmering ("Picture the Day") tone. Improvised settings invest the music with a refreshing openness, as though such songs as "Veil Like Calm" and "Lights of April" weresprung straight from the heart, not the studio. HEART's lovely second half recalls the gorgeous sketch-work of HANDS. The latter's scattered strokes of piano, reeds, guitar, organ, vocal sighs and chants, bells, sax, and rough percussion achieve music of rare beauty, imagistic power, and genuine consequence. A masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remastered masterwork, 29 Jan 2008
By Jerry Nilson - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
These two albums do have too much merit on their own to be released together on one CD, that's the only negative things I can come up with (apart from the delicious LP covers of the originals, which much helped one to get the context right). Drumming the Beating Heart could be seen as the high point in Eyeless In Gaza early life (they are still doing great music even now in 2008). The first side of this Lp offered more harsh beauty of the earlier two albums, combined with a beloved organ playing (they were using an organ in a local church). The 2nd side of Drumming offered more forward-looking sweeter songs and perhaps one of their best songs ever in 'Lights of April'. This Lp influenced a lot of musicians at the time, including people like Björk (who has recently acknowledged this) and they were one of the most popular indie bands of the time. The second album, Pale Hands I Loved So well, is a testament to the experimentalism of Eyeless In Gaza which was always there from the start and which set Eyeless apart from other indie & post-punk bands of the time. Eyeless at the time hated the stagnant rock/pop scene of the time. Pale Hands offers some of the the most colourful emotional improvisational music that has ever seen light of day, with an added bonus of two outstanding vocal tracks that most fans would regard as clearly among the best ever of Eyeless In Gaza. Endless praise, but these two are amongst my top 10 albums ever! (Another person wrote that Cherry Red did not think highly of pale Hands I Loved So Well, but that is not true -- CR was actually frustrated that it was released earlier on their friends Uniton label in Norway. In the long run I think both are about equal in their importance for the Eyeless In Gaza history and many thinks Pale Hands is clearly the better of the two albums!) This new pressing will be released with much improved sound quality!! /Jerry

4.0 out of 5 stars Remastered Revisited, 8 Sep 2007
Pale Hands was my favourite album for most of the 80's and, up until this 2008 remastered release, it hasnt been possible to get a decent copy on CD (the previous version was a very poor recording so beware). It's still my favourite EIG offering. The song writing is bold and stark, even errie and inspirational, but I would have to admit, might not be to everyones pallet. If it was on its own here I think 5 stars would have to be awarded.

Drumming the Beating Heart is OK, but to my ears, not up to Pale Hands or Caught In Flux. From memory it is the start of a period when EIG wanted to move to a more commercial sound, which for me, they werent really suited to. That said, there is still some good stuff on it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Two uneven halves...., 25 Jun 2005

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This is a very frustrating release from Cherry Red. It consists of the entirety of two Eyeless in Gaza albums.

The first half is "Drumming the Beating Heart". This is one of EIG's best albums and represented a change of direction for the group. It ranges from the spiky "Picture the Day", the track that is most like their previous work, to the bluesy Transcience Blues taking in the love song "One by One" and the reflective "Before You Go" on the way. It is a brillaintly consistent album and on its own would have earnt this release five stars.

The second half of the release (Pale Hands I Loved So Well) is a different matter. It consists mostly of experimental instrumentals with two non descript vocal tracks. Frankly most of the tracks are a bit of a nothing and the whole thing outstays its welcome. At best it serves as aural wall paper for when you are too busy to listen closely. There are no highlights. It was first released on Uniton, presumably because Cherry Red didn't think it fit for release at the time.

So, all things considered, is this album worth buying? The answer has to be a cautious yes. The first half is well worth the cost on its own and, if necessary, you can do what I do and press the stop button after track 12. Not an ideal situation, but unless Cherry Red separate the two albums (and I can't see that happening) it is the best that can be managed.
