5.0 out of 5 stars Svetlanov sets the music on fire, 15 Mar 2008

I bought this 2cd set mainly for Manfred Symphony out of curiosity, and was a bit disappointed by the music itself. Performance is very exciting and poewrful as you expect from the heavy-weight conductor. The music is a symphonic poem inspired by Byron's Manfred whose emotional termoil and torment is depicted against dramatic Alpine landscape. With a little help of your imagination, you can appreciate it as Tchaikovsky's Alpine symphony, but the work lacks inspiration and big striking melody you find in other tone poems and fantasies like Francesca da Rimini or 1882 Overture.

My big surprise was the rest of the works. Romeo & Juliet Overture turned out to be one of the most intesely felt performances in my collection. Serenade is absolutely gorgeous with lavishing string sound, noble beauty and masterfully judged tempo for each movement. I prefer this performance to Stokowski, Bernstein, Ormandy and even Karajan's sublime account, for its intense Russian feeling.

The highlight of this set is the incandescent performance of The Tempest. I have several recordings by other conductors, but this one stands out. Svetlanov is a master in achieving most dramatic contrast between stormy forces and rapt serenity of the beautiful melodies. The work is the longest of all Tchaikovsky's tone poems, filled with amazing orchestration and inspired lyrical themes. It is a mystery why such a great work did not receive same acclaim as R&J or 1882 Overtures. 60&70s stereo sound is not bad.
