Julian Joseph is one the best, if THE best British Jazz Pianist working today. This album from 1994 is difficult to get hold of now, but is well worth searching for.

Mostly the tracks are just a Trio, but to make it a little different its a drummerless Trio consisting of Piano and Bass plus either Clarinet or Tenor Sax. The Clarinet player is Eddie Daniels, the Sax player is Johnny Griffin. These four musicians produce something really special. I saw Johnny Griffin at the Brecon Jazz Festival this year and whilst his playing was good he was clearly not the player he once was (hardly surprising at age 78). Here 12 years earlier he is still in top (or close to) form. Track two (the track listing provided by Amazon is in the wrong order) is 'Just Friends' and here Griffin produces a sparkling solo, wringing out bent notes, growls, which provokes Joseph into an equally interesting solo.

Joseph's playing is magnificent at all times, and to my ears he has a quite original style, that is certainly 'modern', but doesn't fall into the common fault with a lot of modern Jazz Pianists of running through scales at a thousand miles an hour.

Eddie Daniels is one of the finest Clarinet players out there, recording as a classical musician and a Jazz player. He is always great on this album, and perhaps because its Clarinet I'm always reminded of Gershwin by his playing. He plays a beautiful version of Mal Waldron's 'Soul Eyes' on this album.

The other musician is Alec Dankworth on bass who maintains the very high standard with some fabulous rhythm playing.

Make the effort and find this album; it will reward you.
