Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The most comprehensive anthology of the Rolling Stones' prime early work collects every single from the beginning up through 1971, A- and B-sides. All the obvious hits are here ("Satisfaction", "Jumping Jack Flash", "Honky Tonk Women", "Brown Sugar") as well as several B-sides ("Stoned", "I Want to Be Loved", "I Don't Know Why AKA I Don't Know Why I Love You") not previously released on CD. But it's the unrelenting succession of great cuts that make this a landmark collection. No band in the history of rock and roll has a catalogue as substantial and hard-hitting. Quite simply, one the most essential rock collections ever released. --Rob O'Connor

CD Description

THE SINGLES COLLECTION: THE LONDON YEARS comes as advertised--the box includes every American and British A-side and B-side the Rolling Stones released between 1963 and 1971 (after which the band began releasing discs under the Rolling Stones Records imprint). The fantastic speed and scope of the Stones' early artistic development have few parallels in popular music, and this collection not only details that incredible process, but serves as a microcosm of '60s pop culture as well.
From the down-and-dirty Chicago-style blues and R&B of the group's early covers (Chuck Berry's "Come On", Willie Dixon's "I Just Wanna Make Love to You") to the dreamy chamber pop of "Lady Jane" and the proto-hard rock of "StreetFightin' Man", the band was always on the cutting edge, both reacting to and anticipating cultural and musical trends. One listen to this box, however, reveals that, unlike the Beatles, the Stones seldom veered far from their roots, alwaysinjecting a vital dose of raw sexuality and pure rock & roll spirit into even the boldest of experiments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Compilation, 20 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This CD commands 5 stars. Its got everything you'd want from a stones record. Having got all their albums, this was a purchase i made to get some of the great tracks on a few cds. This does it well..
Paint it black, street fighting man, jumpin jack flash, satisfaction, shes a rainbow etc etc, they are all splendid songs. This is definitely worth the money, its a great collection of the singles and the price is very reasonable. Thumbs up all the way for *THE* greatest English Band of them all!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Next best thing, 11 Mar 2001
By adc@mail.utexas.edu (Austin, TX, USA) - See all my reviews
In the wake of the stupid decision to substitute the early UK albums with the US cut-and-paste jobs, this is probably the best (certainly least frustrating) way to listen to the early Stones on CD. The first two discs supersede the formerly definitive _Through the Past Darkly_ and _High Tide and Green Grass_ with comprehenive singles coverage; however, the third becomes dubious, too many redundancies with _Sticky Fingers_ and _Beggars Banquet_ (worth buying on their own), and unnecessarily drawing on the never-essential _Metamorphisis_. Drop "In Another Land"/"The Lantern," move "Honky Tonk Women" and "Memo from Turner" over to disc two, and this could have been a five-star two-CD set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, 16 Jan 2002

If you like the more 'bluesy' period of the Stones' career then this collection is for you - especially some of the early B-sides. Musically I would suggest they are much more talented than the Beatles. 58 timeless Stones classics!

This is an amazing feat- 3 CDs of solid, solid class. Every track is sheer magic; some wonderfully off-beat b-sides complementing the singles. Read more
