Social Distortion took a step from the rough punk they we're playing. Social Distortion is their major-label debut and their rock 'n' roll debut. Songs like "Story of My Life" and "It Coulda Been Me" are more personal and more deeper than anything Social Distortion has ever released before.

Sounding more rock doesn't mean loosing the rebellious grip they had. Listening to the lyrics of self-titled album makes you sure what singer/guitarist/songwriter Mike Ness is about. Mike Ness gets motivation from pain, so you will not what to expect from the lyrics. Titles like "Sick Boys", "Drug Train" and "Ball and Chain" tells pretty much...

The album also includes Johnny Cash cover "Ring of Fire". It sounds quite strange, but it blends really well with the other songs... of course it's played with the Social Distortion style.

Major-label Epic also did great job with the production. This album doesn't sound weak and hollow like the predecessors.

It's a great album, but still the band is not yet at it's best... they hit the top on their next record - Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell.
