4.0 out of 5 stars Poppy Sisiters/Mission Influenced Goth, 11 Feb 2001

Rosetta Stone's first release is probably also their best studio effort (not an amazing feat considering how many proper studio albums they've released) and contains some of the classic tracks that are more fully realised on the On The Side of Angels singles collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even a match for the imperious Sisters, 25 Aug 2006
Wholely derivative yet utterly brilliant, this is pure Goth and as close to the perfect Sisters album as it's possible to get without being from Leeds or featuring Andrew E.

It's unadulterated by the later industrial stylings the band would adopt and unencumbered by the dreaded cover version or remix that props up so many of their albums. This is 'First And Last And Always' with a beefed up production and slightly more Ooomph. It's depths aren't as dark but the choruses are bigger.

All that may make it seem as if 'Eye For The Main Chance' is some poor rip off but it stands squarely on it own two feet. It's just about different enough to give Rosetta Stone their own identity while still being soaked completely in Goth. Real Goth too, not HIM or Marilyn Manson etc.

If you like the Sisters, snakebite & black and black you'll love this. Try also to d/l the song 'Adrenaline' (It's on one of Rosetta Stone's many compilations) which is a pure-bred dancefloor classic up there with 'Temple of Love' and the pinnacle of this bands achievements before they descended into sub Nine Inch Nails electronica.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nothing new here, 20 Sep 2007
By Tony Ruddock (Leeds, England) - See all my reviews
This is pure 'old school' (mid 1980's) British Goth. Totally derivative, personally I can't see the comparisons to the Sisters (who were, in my opinion, far superior), apart from the style of the artwork on the cover.

To me the sound is more reminiscent of the earlier Mission stuff (examples being God's Own Medicine or the compilation album The First Chapter).

Sorry guys, it just doesn't cut it for me.
