Product Description

CD Description
Though its tracks were collected from a series of singles, MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE holds together remarkably well as analbum. Opening with "Little Girl (With Blue Eyes)", Pulp announces its intent right off--with such lyrics as "There's ahole in your heart and one between your legs, You've never had to worry which one he's going to fill". This is a disturbed collection of songs that dwells lyrically on personal power struggles amid a decaying society. Musically, the emphasis is on slow, menacing swells of sound punctuated by the squalls of angry guitars and violins.
Russell Senior's vocal turn on "The Will to Power" has the kind of intensity thatmakes one fear for his sanity. While primary vocalist Jarvis Cocker's voice rarely hits quite the same level of uncomfortable derangement, his lyrics are another matter. He spews bile and anger at the real and imagined treacheries committed against his characters. Candida Doyle's keyboards frequently form the centre of the songs, whether as the primary instrument ("97 Lovers") or as a mood-setter, as in the supremely nasty "Aborigine". This record is designed for late, late nights when nothing but true depravity will help to alleviate the worst of moods.

4.0 out of 5 stars A peek through twitching curtains at twilight..., 10 Jun 2003
This is a good collection of warped, stripped down, early singles and E.P.s from Pulp. DON'T expect the glitzy disco sheen and upbeat razmatazz of their mid-period, or indeed, the lush darkness of the later albums. This has most in common with "Freaks"; in fact a couple of tracks, in reworked versions, made it onto that album. The music, itself, is not nearly as accomplished as those later records, but it does have a warped, jerky charm which is pared down and eerie in places, gratingly urgent in others. At times, it's clumsy; the sound of a band finding their feet, learning to explore arrangements and sounds. Jarvis' voice hasn't yet achieved its rich tones and has a habit of slipping into monotony, but in a glorious nod to Pulp's eccentricity, this works with many of the songs, fuelling the claustrophobic, desperate atmosphere and skewed, scathing lyrics. Suburban perversions; bad sex; cracked romantic encounters; bitterness and regret; dumb, mundane urban violence; the vagaries of ageing: these are the themes. It's no Disco 2000, but if you liked "Freaks" or even, at a push, " Separations", then you could find this a fine ride back into the dark heart of early Pulp.

1.0 out of 5 stars The worst colection of songs in the world ever!, 1 Feb 2000
By A Customer
This is a terible colection of songs. On the entire CD there are no songs worth hearing. The CD stars of bad but builds to be the most depresing ever made by finishing with 97 lovers. 97 lovers is the worst song in the world ever! It sounds like a funeral march with Jarvis droning over the top, the only pleasure you get from it is when it stops. Do not even think about listening to this album.
