I totally disagree that this is a 'woman's album'...since when did gender come into liking a certain type of music!!!
Anyway...
This album is completely and utterly fabulous because Eddi Reader IS completely and utterly fabulous on every album she has released so far...its THAT voice.
This album reminds me of warm summer afternoons and lonely winter nights all at once...beautiful to say the least.
I recommend anyone buy this album and give it a few listens...you'll be hooked!
P.S. The late,great Kirsty MacColl co-wrote 'Dear John' too...and if you are aware what a 'dear john' is...you'll prepare your wee self before listening...

Eddi Reader's eponymously titled 1994 release is a great little album.
I revisited it recently after a chance hearing of single 'The Right Place' and
was reminded of my instant transportation into this wonderful singer's world.

I had not known of her work with Fairground Attraction at that time ( a gap
in my musical education subsequently rectified ) but that one number was
( and remains ) a thing of real beauty. The composition by former band buddy and
guitarist Mr Nevin stands shoulder to shoulder with the best songs of that decade.

Delving further into the album's 12 compositions delivers many magical rewards.

Ms Reader's voice is a captivating instrument. Warm, quirky, expressive and with an
extraordinary dynamic range ( witness the stratospherically high arabesques in the
concluding bars of 'The Exception' ).
Her folk roots shine subtly but proudly at the heart of many of these performances.

MrNevin and Ms MacColl's song 'Dear John' is given a
heartbreakingly timeless and tender interpretation.
The warm and uncluttered arrangement allows Ms Reader
room to breathe and deliver her best.

Mr Penny's production is, throughout, a small masterclass in judicious economy,
his skills placed sensitively at the service of the artist and her project.

In the album credits Ms Reader thanks "all the musicians who gave
their instincts to this record".

They also very tangibly deliver both their love and respect for the performer.

In the ravishing harmonies of 'East Of Us', co-written with Mr Borowiecki,
( whose piano and accordian should not pass unnoticed ) you will discover
the proud beating heart of this endlessly beguiling and satisfying recording.
It is a dear and perfect thing.

Listen again if you haven't heard it for a while.
If you don't know it ( trust me ) you need this marvellous music in your life.

Essential.

If you liked the style of Fairground Attraction, you will love this! Eddi Reader has the most wonderful voice and range. This album makes you feel happy, sad and all the emotions inbetween. Particular tracks to listen to are The Exception and Wonderful Lie. Definately a womans album!
