Product Description

CD Description
STREETLIFE SERENADE may have been a disappointment to Joel's record company, featuring but one single, "The Entertainer", that barely scraped the Top 40, but it's loaded with songs that came to be signature pieces for the piano man. For years, Joel began his concerts with a piped-in version of the instrumental "The Mexican Connection" and closed them by playing the bittersweet ballad "Souvenir". Another instrumental, the fast and infectious "Root Beer Rag", served as a favourite piano showcase throughout Joel's career, while the snide and clever "The Entertainer" began a career-long obsessionwith the evils of the pop industry.
Most of the album isabout suburbia and its malcontents. While Englishman Elton John, to whom Joel was already being compared, devoted his second major-label album to a concept album about the mythological American West, Joel devoted his to the very real American frontier of strip malls and backyard barbecues in which he grew up. No romanticising was intended. In case Joel's growing cynicism wasn't already evident, the album's one love song, "Roberta", is written to a hooker.

I've been a fan of Billy's since I saw him play in the mid 80's. Probably my favourite albums are The Nylon Curtain, Streetlife Serenade & Songs In The Attic.
On this particular album, Los Angelenos, The Great Suburban Showdown, Streetlife Seranader & Roberta- plus the rest obviously!- in particular kill me! How I dream of writing Los Angelenos, criminally under rated by fans who dont undertsand the man as an artist.
This is similar in vein to The Nylon Curtain in that it is angry.
The Entertainer is my least liked track on this release, in that I can tell this was record company pressure- he kind of turned it around though with the songs' bitter irony winning the day. Also the songs cheesy keyboard solo sounds purposely done, to compliment the sarcastic lyrics. All in all, this is beautiful, & sometimes when I return to my hometown, feeling a failure, I bang this on & the first few chords of Streetlife Serenader transport me to a somewhat more confident place in life.

3.0 out of 5 stars Streetlife Serenade, 3 Nov 2003
By KIRK (Durham, North East, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Streetlife Serenade (Audio CD)
I have always found the early years of Billy Joels Career most compelling artistically (though not commercially). However slagged off by critics Streetlife Serenade is a collection of songs about the lower middle class struggle through life.
Opening with Streetlife Serenader - Joel's self admitted most fulfilling song tells the stoy of the unsung busker - a beautiful piano piece with a particularly romantic solo. Just as Joel told the story of a man called Bill in Piano Man, he tells the story of a prostitute in 'Roberta', a very nice (however morbid) love song. The ertainer is the stand out and provides the rock as does the keyboard thumping 'Los Angelenos'. 'The Great Suburban Showdown', Last Of The Big Time Spenders and 'Souviner' provide the thoughtful and poetic ballads which Joel has knack for writing. Joel gives us two impressive instrumentals 'Root Beer Rag' and 'The Mexican Connection' which shows off his amazing piano skills
All though I wouldn't advise first time buyers to purchase this album as it does not fit the commercial mould (as Joel himself had in mind) this is a fine collection of artistic songs by a rapidly progessing singer/songwriter, if you like that idiom you will probably benefit from Streetlife Serenade and it's follow up 'Turnstiles' (my favourite!) Enjoy the fruits of a man so bitterly underatted.
