5.0 out of 5 stars One For The Early Hours, 22 Jul 2001
How do you begin to describe a CD that appears to respect no boundaries? Norwegian vocal artist Sidsel Endresen has emerged as one of the foremost Nordic voices in the last decade with avant-garde jazz albums on the ECM label such as 'Exile' and 'I Write'. Bugge Wesseltoft, a respected jazz pianist and synthesiser artist, has always been at the leading edge of contemporary musical exploration, achieving considerable success lately with his 'new Conception of Jazz' series. This album, from 1997, is a bewildering but ultimately hugely satisfying meeting of these two distinct but highly complimentary artistes. The first track 'Singles' starts with 3 minutes of haunting unaccompanied chanting from Ms Endresen which shifts abruptly into a semi-atonal piano/vocal duet. Then, to dislocate our senses a little further, we are treated to a quiet, thoughtful rendition of Paul Simon's 'Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover', a poem 'And Later, The Rain' spoken over a background of slow fitful percussion followed by a haunting ballad 'Call Me'. The title track 'Duplex Ride' is a sound-poem about a journey through the London underground system, that starts slowly and then builds to a nightmarish crescendo of menacing synthesiser drones and vocal shrieks and gasps. Throw in a version of the Hathaway/Hutson classic 'Trying Times' and a beautiful piano/vocal ballad 'Okay' which at times reminds me of Sarah McLachlan and you're left with a feeling that you've taken a ride to somewhere entirely different, yet at the same time, completely familiar. Definitely one for the early hours.

1.0 out of 5 stars vocals vs jazz = pleasure, 2 Nov 2002

After hearing this duo on the second "Late Junction" album, this is very different: more jazzy and experimental, a little like Laurie Anderson. Initially disappointing because of the expectation of breathy Nordic mysticism, this grows on you very quickly. Intriguing and rewarding.
