5.0 out of 5 stars Swedens finest, 24 Oct 2002
Refused changed the punk scene in Sweden in the early 90's with their new brand of hardcore. The sound was fresh and aggresive and it is still one of the best albums in my collection. The lyrics are some of the best, very political and angry. Combine that with a pumping guitar and bass, some awsome drums and the screams of Dennis and you got on of the best albums ever made.

4.0 out of 5 stars very different to their more famous album, 11 Jul 2004
this is an earlier album than theshape of punk to come and to be frank it shows, i was looking through q or something today and it featured refused in a small column and they only gave the shape of punk to came 4 stars which was unjust but they arent really and punk magazine so it is almost understandable and this i beleive was given 2 stars which quite simply is wrong it is not the shape of punk to come and havaing heard that first it was hard not to draw comparisons to refused's opus but in istening to this its my belief that in listening to this you must forget the shape of punk to come to truly apparciate this.

Firstly the style of music is not the same as it is later on this is strictly very hardcore punk with as much in common with thrash metal as modern punk but it is better than thrash metal can ever be, the basslines absolutely rock the guitars shower you with relentless chords or whatever theyre called (dont blame me for not kowing the name i did get an e at gcse music, how i hated that subject) but in a structured way and where as the shape of punk to come uses many songs and musical techiniques as a juxtapose to others this album seems to just goes from one song to the next without to much fuss (the songs are different and are not all the same only the stlye remains similar). the music is deceptively well written, while at first glance it seems to be mindless thrashing of the guitar listen more closelty and for longer and you realise it is a lot deeper than most similar stuff with intricate playing and there is skill in the musicianship.

this is not produced fantasticly it gives them a very realistic even garageband feel, the singing does not compare to the vocals in the shape of punk to come (i wouldnt be surprised if the lineup had changed but im not quite sure about that) but has its own charm (not really the right word) it sound live maybe not quite that good to be frank and the words are fast and unclear it is often hard to know what the lyrics are without them in front of you but you get used to it.

this is a good album and worth a listen to i only wish i had heard this first i would have been able to appretiate this more but this didnt happen so i have to be open minded and enjoy it for its garage hardcore punk not what the band is most famous for but you are able to see the beginings of the band who would go on to write shape of punk to come which is one of the best ever punk albums.

over all a good album with more depth than it seems to have initially only let down by refused's later greater album and the expectaion after having heard that first.
