In the continuum of African music, Angelique Kidjo is a decidedly non-traditional practitioner, and she wouldn't have it any other way. A synthesist of remarkable savvy, Kidjo brings together radio-friendly pop, soul-diva stylings, and contemporary club production with vocal motifs and rhythms fromher native Benin. AYE is a further step in the artist's efforts to blend these disparate elements.
Recorded half at Minneapolis's Paisley Park studios (with sessions produced by Prince collaborator David Z), and half in London at Soul II Soul studios (with sessions produced by Soul II Soul's Will Mowat), AYE's reflects the eclectic yet streamlined pop aesthetics of those respective camps. The album's single, "Agolo", leads off, and establishes the bright Afropop sound that dominates the rest of the disc. The harder-edged "Adouma" and the expansive, soaring "Djan-Djan" help mix things up, making AYE an adventurous listening experience.

This album is upbeat and innovative, and Kidjo is such a talented artist I'm personally surprised that nobody has reviewed this so far. I firt bought the album after hearing 'Adouma', which still nver fails to make me want to dance, but all the tracks are diverse , it would be difficult to pick a favourite. I couldn't really compare it to anything else I own (which i think is a good thing!), but this is an excellent album I can happily recommend.

I first heard this on a roadtrip in a friend's car and we nearly ran off the road trying to dance while driving. The only disadvantage about having my own copy is that I must play is on high volume and I still can't sit still while it is playing. It is wonderful to find some good music that does not correspond to any of the market's categories or styles. This is just itself, and it is very good.

(Wish I knew what the lyrics meant though)
