4.0 out of 5 stars The Birth of Hed Kandi's grooves, 9 Dec 2001
By R. Pieters "r.pieters@ntlworld.uk" (Harlow Essex) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I believe this was the earliest Hed Kandi release marketed on the Jazz Fm label along with Nu cool 2 before the label spun off to become Jazz Fm's succesful clubbers branch as the Hed kandi label. For Nu cool 1 the sounds are for the summer and the perfect soundtrack to warm the winter nights with uplifting jazzy grooves and soulful mid tempo shufflers on disc 1 . Disc 2 is a laid back collection of quality.Nu Cool features more popular artistes as opposed to the more obscure tracks such as Nuyorican Soul's classic to summer grooves by Soundscape Uk, Eryka Badu and Leena Conquest. This really is a strong collection of laid back grooves , but what else could you expect from a compilation by Hed Kandi's Mark Doyle ?

5.0 out of 5 stars The best one so far, 7 Oct 2003
By A Customer
This is the best Hedkandi album so far. Some of the chill-out stuff I've bought is just a bit too gloomy, or so laid back that you forget to listen. This Nu Cool however has enough energy to keep it interesting and is smoother than frog hair.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hed Kandi: Nu Cool, Vol. 1, 7 April 2006
By A Customer
A fantastically programmed cd. In hindsight to see what the Hed Kandi label is turning into - mass market mix albums and ever elabourate covers, Nu Cool is a subtle reminder of a label in its infancy.
There is such a quality to the track programming and selection, this album feels like an education in itself.
With the quality of perhaps more well known artists like Jamiroquai ,Erykah Badu and Nuyorican Soul drawing initial investigation.Other highlights include The Quiet Boys reworking of Roy Ayres Everybody Loves The Sunshine and Hit the Boom's uplifting and happy Here Comes The Sun.
Disc 1 is slightly more uptempo than disc 2 but the balance is perfect.
In summary, if you want a wonderfuly satisfying palette of quality proper R & B and Jazz funk which is especially good on a lazy afternoon, buy this Cd because its sure to become a rarity.
The Nu Cool brand of the Hed Kandi was reprised soon after label founder Mark Doyle parted company. A welcome return, but still poor by comparison to volume 1.
