I know it'll get your skeptical hackles rising, but this is honestly the best record ever in the history of the world. A perfect piece of work, by a master singer/writer/performer at the height of his powers. This record signals the end of Jonathan's early snotty punk period, and his move into world music (read: mento, ska, reggae, latin, japanese) influenced work. Recorded as live, using entirely acoustic instruments in what sounds like somebody's concrete-floored basement, this album has a truly unique sound. If you like Jionathan Richman, but you haven't heard this, you must buy it. If you're interested in the history and developement of punk rock, you must buy this record. If you like great rock and roll records, you'll love this one. If you have a problem with occasional twee-ness and children's songs don't worry: Jonathan carries it of with panache. I've worn out two vinyl copies of this album, and had at least another two disappear into the borrowing void. Six stars.
