5.0 out of 5 stars Bernstein Makes This Music Sing!, 6 Aug 2002
By E. A. Redfearn "eredfearn2" (Middlesbrough) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The 7th Symphony is without doubt, one of Mahler's advanced creations. At times, its difficult to comprehend what this music really is about. Therefore, its not surprising that a performance of this was not introduced into the United States until the 1930s. Bernstein's intrepretation is masterful however. He makes the music sing at times, from the flowing movement of the opening bars of rising harmonies, to the famous "moonlight" episode of the same movement; the simple gestures of chamber music style in the quieter movements; and the dark sinister sounds of the nightmarish "Nachtmusik" movement. It is only in the final movement which has baffled admirers and scholars alike which perhaps still leave unanswered questions about the symphony as a whole. Perhaps, its a symphony of "mood", alternating between "light" and "dark". Bernstein has achieved wonders with this difficult material and I have no doubt has many admirers of his intrepretation. Recording and playing are very consistent throughout, and no admirer of Mahler should really be without this version.
