Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Best-Of's don't come much better than this: 20 tracks from one of the superlative bands of all time. Sly Stone's gift as producer and ringleader was to mesh the emerging big-band, good-time funk sound of the late 1960s with an unerring sense of melody, structure and message. The result, on early hits like "Dance To The Music", "M'Lady", "Stand" and "Everyday People", was some of most gleeful, high-spirited and uplifting music ever made. Later, as the 1960s gave way to the long hangover of the 70s and Stone himself descended into drug abuse, sophisticated songs like "If You Want Me To Stay" and "Family Affair" took on a melancholic, reflective tinge, while a sharp political edge found its way into "Runnin' Away" and "Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey". Genius through and through. --David Bennun

3.0 out of 5 stars Ten Years Too Soon., 13 Mar 2004
By AlanMusicMan (Salisbury UK) - See all my reviews

In the late 1970s CBS (who owned the Sly catalogue at that time) put out a collection on 12" singles and an album too of the best of Sly and the Family Stone. That collection/campaign was entitled "Sly and the Family Stone - Ten Years Too Soon" - the implication being that Sly and the Family Stone WERE disco music before Discos really existed - and it's true! they certainly pioneered some of those styles, in chart terms at least.

So, in this collection we have all that was good about SATFS. UK fans should beware that the original UK single of "Dance to the Music" was heavily edited by CBS UK to conform to the strictures of radio at the time. For the UK version they didn't just trim it for length, they completely changed the actual order of the music! I can't recall many instances where that was done. What's on this CD is the original record as issued - not that UK edit.

All the classic are here including the sublime "Family Affair" the underrated "If You Want Me to Stay" and the strangely influential "Sing a Simple Song" (which was actually originally released as the UK B side of the also influential "Everyday People" - yes, that's here too). We also have makeweight stuff like the unattractive "M'Lady" which was a cynical nearly note for note remake of "Dance to the Music".

So lots of styles, lots of seminal stuff and well worth another spin if you want to understand one of the more important steps along the way to how disco/dance music got to where it is today.

5.0 out of 5 stars monumental, 22 Mar 2001
By A Customer
IF it was desert island disc time this would be there! From one of the top three acts ever, comes a definative greatest 'hits', although that is cringeworthy! What must be realised is that the collection of songs presented here, are some of the most soulful efforts ever to grace tape.

The styles attempted (and mastered) are still unequalled in modern music. You really want to know how to collude jazz, rock, soul, dance, take a lesson from Sly.

Its is a pity not more of the Epic period LP's are avaiable (Stand!, Life, Dance to the Music), but as an introduction and gateway which has a 'NO RETURN' policy (which is a good thang)beg steal borrow ( sly would be proud of you )!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally mind blowing!, 12 May 2000
By A Customer
I brought this cd after watching a channel 4 documentary on 70s soul music, and it is probably one of the best cds I have ever heard. I love all the songs. The music is so funky (sorry, but you can't descibe it any other way), you just want to get up and join in. This really is a brilliant album, with some upbeat songs and soulful slow songs. Get this album. You WON'T regret it!
