Product Description
Amazon.co.uk Review
Her third album delayed by tussles with her label over the banjo on the single "Lose Your Way", Sophie B. Hawkins turned to her Internet fans and the resulting e-mail campaign got this album released in the form she intended. The arrangements she fought for are often lovely; unfortunately, the songs behind them don't have much of the conceptual and melodic elegance of her earlier hits. Timbre's songs are almost all moon-eyed mid-tempo ballads, with sexed-up lyrics vague enough that they're open to pretty much any interpretation. Aside from "The Darkest Childe", a bizarre spiel surrounded by sampled voices and sound effects, it's awfully bland--disappointing from a songwriter who was once anything but that. --Douglas Wolk

5.0 out of 5 stars The best written songs for years..., 5 Jan 2000
By A Customer
Sophie B Hawkins had well documented difficulty getting this album released, having written it in 1996, but her perseverance has paid off in volumes. What we have here are 12 very original songs crossing several genres, ranging from the beautiful to the challenging, but all maintaining that soft lilting rhythm that is SBH's trademark. She makes use of a vast array of instruments and not a few production tricks to acheive her sound, and every note and word reflects the dedication and belief that this woman invests in her art. The music is often reminiscent of classical 50s and 60s ballads, then will descend into a growling guitar track and some thumping 90s production, all the time pervaded by a steady, unusual voice backed by evident belief. But what cannot be forgotten is the writing, the lyrics that work their sometimes haunting, sometimes thrilling way under the mind's skin and sit there mulling away at the thoughts. From the aching beauty of "Lose Your Way" to the angry edge of "Darkest Childe" and gritty hope of "Help Me Breathe", this album is a perfect showcase for somebody with plenty to say and an innate ability to entertain. I recommend this album whole-heartedly to anyone who likes to listen to their music.
