Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Back in 1981, Harmonium John Adams out as a major new voice in American music, and it's still high-octane listening today. Minimalism with an unashamedly romantic soul, these reflections on mortality have a truly existential dimension! The glowing choral writing of "Negative Love" captures the full-force of John Donne's emotive musings. Adams respects the formality of Emily Dickinson's "Because I Could Not Stop for Death", while the orchestra, with its subtle backdrop of gongs, vividly evokes the death-haunted scene. The setting of Dickinson's "Wild Nights" opens with a crescendo of breathtaking velocity, and the adrenaline keeps flowing until the coda's mood of fulfilled calm; the sense of space here would not sound out of place in Sibelius. De Waart's performance, made soon after the premi&agrav;re, captures the music's immediacy on the wing (a recent account by Robert Shaw and his Atlanta forces on Telarc sadly doesn't come close), reinforced by ECM's open sound-balance. At barely 32 minutes, this disc is short measure, but it's an essential purchase even so. --Richard Whitehouse

5.0 out of 5 stars so close, 13 May 2004
Amazing piece, perhaps like nothing you've heard before.
Quite a muffled recording, just not quite capturing the excitement. Go hear this live.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, 27 Nov 2007
Harmonium is a giant of a work for chorus and large orchestra. In it, John Adams accomplishes the impossible by creating a work that sounds remarkably simple if you allow your attention just to bounce across the surface. When you listen, the work becomes a deeply complex, multi-layered piece. In concert, there's no way you can miss the detail. You can't turn the volume down on forces like this! John Adams sets poems by John Donne and Emily Dickinson, the latter choice a harrowing vision of death juxtaposed with ecstasy. The setting of the words is quite masterly, confirming John Adams as one of the most accomplished as well as one of the most original voices in music. My only criticism of the cd is its length. There's a single work and the total length is less than 33 minutes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beuty in modern music still lives!, 26 Jun 2007

Despite its brevity this CD is indispensible, for Harmonium is the finest and most beautiful piece of American music yet written, and this is its best performance on disc. The work gives the lie to claims that nobody is writing music that is aesthetically progressive and yet lovely and tuneful any more. The Dickinson settings are particularly wonderful.
