5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best., 30 Nov 2003
This is Runrig's first album and in many respects their best. As a Gaidhlig speaker myself its great to see an all-Gaidhlic album come out which has a more lively modern twist to it. Most of the songs on the album were written by Calum himself and its' good to see original songwriting in the Gaidhlig tongue. Ceól an Dannsa, Air an Traigh, and Dé Ní Mi are my personal favourites from an album of quality songs. If you're a Runrig fan and don't have this album, then go and get it. If you're thinking of getting into the band, get this first. Their early stuff is unsurpassed.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent debut. Some gems here., 14 Jan 2009
By Kilted Keith (Scotland) - See all my reviews
Five years after their formation as a Scottish ceilidh band, Runrig finally released their first album in 1978. Thirty five years later, this first album bears very little resemblance to the high-powered rock athems and subtle ballads produced by the Runrig of 2009, but is still an interesting and enjoyable insight into the early years.

"Play Gaelic" is the only one of Runrig's 13 studio albums performed entirely in the Gaelic mother tongue. Strongly influenced by 70s folk band "Na h-Oganaich", this album is by far the most folky sounding, and was recorded the year before guitar legend Malcolm Jones, who more than anyone, defined the Runrig sound over the subsequent three decades, joined.

The majority of tracks are self-penned by founder member Calum MacDonald, with occasional assistance from brother Rory during their student days in Glasgow. Highlights from the album include 2 tracks now accepted into the traditional Gaelic canon as classics - "Chi m'in Geamhreadh" and the wonderful "Cum Ur N'aire" which closes the album.

A charming debut album of it's era, Play Gaelic was an important release marking the beginning of the career of one of Scotland's greatest and most enduring and unique rock bands, and perhaps more importantly, the beginning of the renaissance of Gaelic music and culture at the end of the 20th Century in Scotland.

3.0 out of 5 stars A gentle diving into Gaelic Seventies, 18 Jan 2006
Released in 1978, this first Runrig album it's a time machine - taking you back to the kind of eeried folk-rock atmospheres styled by musicians like Simon and Garfunkel or America all along the Sixties and Seventies. A special mention for the energetic "Duisg mo Run" and "Tillidh" and for the set of ballads "Sunndach", "An Ros" and "Chi mi'n Geamhradh". Not exactly what I expected. It's a pleasant, fine-sounding, relaxing listening that still retains the original freshness - but if you love celtic music taking root in your soul, you should navigate other waters.
