5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, hammond-organ easy-listening meets bad-ass jungle., 30 Jul 2000
Clifford somehow manages to negotiate the seemingly impossible tight-rope between cheesyasbrie easy-listening jazz funk and complexascobweb, mind-blending jungle with ease. Once you've picked your way through the under-growth ( and I warn you there are a lot of beats to get through ), this is the most smile-inducing 'I feel like I've just won the lottery' album I've ever encountered. Who needs pro-plus ?

3.0 out of 5 stars muso music, 22 Aug 2002
I am caught it two minds about this album. I do like it, but why do I like it. Sometimes I think I like this album more for what this album is trying to achieve rather what the actual music sounds like. "I was young" is radically different from almost everything else else out their. Seventies muso jazz mixed with sonic drum and bass, its an obvious combo. Don't buy this and expect Roni Size, if anything it is more akin to peshay's stunning debut album, Miles From Home, especially the first two tracks.

Some of the tunes on "I Was Young" are truely amazing. Each bass note bonuces strait from a double bass, the disco esque piano leads soar like Cool and the Gangs better moments, and beneath it all you have the continual, and I cannot express this enough, sonic jungle beat. It doesn't always work mind and on occassions I have dropped some of the tunes in a set, some smart arse has come up and said. "Is the CD skipping?" Those are the moments when you think, gilberto slow down take it easy. Still, this album is good, maybe brilliant, but it is also an aquired taste so maybe check out one or two of his songs first before you take the plunge.
