4.0 out of 5 stars The definitive Arabella, 26 Jul 2001
Lisa della Casa was the reigning Arabella of the post war era. Peaches and cream has been the often quoted description of her voice, and indeed no other is necessary - it is an exquisite instrument. Della Casa takes Arabella far beyond peaches and cream though, with a touch of mettle in a multi-faceted and definitive performance. She is well matched throughout, with Hilde Gueden a credible Zdenka, and George London a charismatic Mandryka. The rest of the sizeable cast were all Vienna stalwarts of the day, and this opera is in their blood. South African diva Mimi Coertse makes an appearance as a raucous Fiakermilli, one of the rare commercial recordings available of her. Solti drives the orchestra too much in places, but manages to find the requisite "schwung" where it's needed. A classic set, unsurpassed, and in surprisingly good sound.

Some people don't like Solti, it seems, on the grounds of ruthlessness; others may call it vigour and find it exciting. If you do like him, then this is a 5-star performance. Not only do you get Lisa della Casa, you get her with the marvellous Hilde Gueden. As a result, the great Act 1 duet is an object lesson in Viennese ensemble singing. If you ever wondered what rubato meant, now's your chance to find out, and hear it perfectly controlled by singers used to singing together, totally on top of their roles, with supreme Viennese style.

Having heard excerpts from the opera on another CD, and having been mesmerised by the beauty of Lisa della Casa's voice, I decided to buy this recording (I bought it from HMV and paid £30 for it ... so buy it from Amazon instead!). The recording quality is amazingly good, considering it was recorded in the 50's; but Solti's conducting is cold-blooded and mechanical. The supporting roles are well-sung, with the exception of George London's colourless and uninspired Mandryka. The real reason for buying this CD is because it immortalises Lisa della Casa's celebrated Arabella. Her creamy, soaring soprano, with its unmistakeable timbre is at its finest here. What a pity her Mandryka was not equal to her.
