Product Description

CD Description

Erasure's third album, 1988's THE INNOCENTS, features the US breakthrough hits "A Little Respect", and "Chains of Love", and is a welcome departure for the duo. With this release,Vince Clarke and Andy Bell move away from the strictly-synthesized Hi-NRG dance-pop of their earlier albums, adding horns and gospel-tinged backing vocals for a more soulful, organic sound, while maintaining the disco vitality of earlier albums like WONDERLAND or THE CIRCUS.
Bell's lyrics are more overt in their social commentary, as on "Phantom Bride" and "A Little Respect", and he pointedly leaves the original gender references intact in the CD-only cover of Tina Turner's classic "River Deep, Mountain High". However, the duo is still capable of camp silliness like "Sixty-Five Thousand" and "Yahoo!" giving the album a balanced sensibility. THE INNOCENTS ranks with 1989's WILD! and 1994's I SAY I SAY I SAY as one of Erasure's best albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recaptured Youth, 13 Jan 2003
By Steve Bates (West Bromwich, West Midlands United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Having heard an Erasure medley at an 80s night recently, I have finally gotten round to buying the Erasure back catalogue on CD. I own them all on cassette, but they're all in a box in the loft. I thought that a classic album such as this deserved better, so I have just ordered it (along with Circus, Wild and Chorus)so I can enjoy it all over again. Back in '88 when I was the tender age of 13, this was my favourite album, and "A Little Respect" remains one of my favourite songs, sadly it was recently slaughtered by some bloody awful American band whose name I can't be arsed to remember. There are some songs on The Innocents that deserve to be heard, like the superb Hallowed Ground, which is my favourite track off the album. If you're thinking of doing the same as me and buying this great album, do it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply brilliant!, 15 Jan 2000
By A Customer
This was the first Erasure album I had ever purchased, bought on the strength of "A Little Respect" which was in the charts at the time. The songs have excellent vocals from Andy Bell, which blend perfectly with Vince Clarke's superb synthesized music. My least favourite track on the album is "Sixty-five thousand" which sounds out of place being an instrumental. Favourite tracks are "Phantom Bride" (great lyrics), "A Little Respect" (the reason I bought the CD), "Heart of Stone" and "Hallowed Ground" (very haunting lyrics and music).

If you like 80's synth-pop, you will love this album. What's more, this album still sounds fresh 12 years after buying it!

5.0 out of 5 stars erasure complete sound, 1 Feb 2000
from the opening to the end this is a classic cd. Stephen hague produced the album and it brings the best out of erasure.Phantom bride is a real gem with synths sounding better than ever.the whole feel is of a medievil time mixed with electro.
