As a composer trying to work their way into the world of orchestral film scores, I found this CD to be extremely useful. Yehudi Menuhin talks us through the instruments of the symphony orchestra with individual examples of the range and tone of each instrument. Each section of the orchestra is covered in detail with all individual instruments from the strings, woodwind, brass & saxophone, harp & celeste and percussion sections. Don't know how interesting this would be to anyone else, but as a clear introduction to the symphony orchestra, I found it very useful.

This recording originated on 12" vinyl in 1964 and was used as a teaching aid, which is how I first encounterd it as a schoolboy. It provides a valuable insight into each instrument of the orchestra. The late Yehudi Menuhin (violinist) describes each instrument in turn, and a soloist demonstrates the tone and range of each instrument, usually followed by a short piece of music featuring the instrument being demonstrated so listeners can hear the instrument among the full orchestra.

This CD version is a replica of the original recording and has not been altered or amended. It accurately portrays the timbre of each instrument
and can both fire and capture the interest of music students.
