5.0 out of 5 stars A very strong recording in a strong field, 20 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Forget the rather positive but cautious reviews from certain sections of the classical music press, this is the genuine article. Hilary Hahn is a violinist of great musical profndity as well as great virtuosity. Where many of the whizz-kids would have opted for the technical fireworks repertoire (as well as interpretation of the Beethoven), Hahn has produced a performance here of a sensitivity and subtlety well beyond her years. This is a performance of the Beethoven for the discerning listener, with an astounding attention to phrase, line and underlying structure. Her sound is effortless without ever sounding over-polished; leaving an overall impression of an incredibly refined and yet emotional interpretation.

As if to underline the point, Hahn's choice of twinning the Bernstein Serenade with the Beethoven Concerto is both daring and convincing. Again, this is a piece which needs playing of maturity above virtuosity, and Hahn produces here arguably the best version on record (in my opinion even eclipsing the composer's own version with Gidon Kremer on Sony.)

While this may not be the first recommendation for a first-time buyer of the Beethoven Concerto (there are many strong contenders, Perlman/Philharmonia/Giulini for example) this is a recording which cannot fail to please anyone - incluing the listener who already knows and loves the concerto and would like to approach it in a new light.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful..., 23 April 2003
Hilary Hahn's interpretation of Beethoven's violin concerto is the greatest that I've heard, in my opinion far superior to Kyung Wha Chung, Pearlman and Anne Sophie Mutter. Hahn is unique in the strength and exitement she brings to the outer movements communicated through her phenomenal mastery of the instrument. The slow movement is sublime and spiritual. Hahn is possibly THE most technically assured violinist around, unlike other big names she never produces an ugly sound and each note is heard in crystal clarity. As well as this she also brings so much in interpretation to the music, her performances are vital, mature and engaging: she brings life to every phrase.
