This CD is that happy combination of superb music, organ, playing and recording - all on a super-budget label! Buxtehude's music and this organ are inextricably linked by virtue of its style and design. Originally built by Arp Schnitger between 1689 and 1693, the organ's most recent restoration was carried out in 1993 after having been dismantled and hidden away during World War 2. After spending nearly six million marks, it is now back to its former glory. Its specification has 60 stops spread over 4 manuals and pedals, the latter including both 32' Principal and 32' Posaune. For centuries this has been one of Europe's most important organs. Bach himself almost took up a position there following the death of his first wife, but went to Leipzig instead. The organist on this disc is fully worthy of this heritage. A multiple prizewinner, he is little known outside Germany. Hopefully that situation will now change, and he will be engaged to make many more recordings. With the organ's tuning at a'=495Hz, all the works played here sound sharp to modern ears, none more so than the Praeludium in F-sharp minor which has been transposed up a semitone to avoid clashes in the mean tone temperament. Personally, I wish he hadn't, as mean tone was widely used in the 17th and 18th centuries, and many of the harmonic frissons that Buxtehude surely had intended are minimised. Controversy continues over this subject, most recently in the correspondence columns of the May and August 2000 Organists' Reviews. There have been other CDs of this organ including a recent one from Priory Records. But for this present release we have superb playing with imaginative registrations on one of Europe's finest historic organs, and is a winner in every respect.

Marvellous playing on a wonderful organ with demonstration quality recording. The pacing of "Gelobet seist du, Jesus Christ" is perfect - more measured than Spang-Hanssen and faster than Walter Kraft it draws the listener into Buxtehude's private world - quite hypnotic in its effect.
