5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing a classic, 10 Sep 2003
By p.j.sanderson (Keighley, West Yorkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
The Beethoven Violin Concerto is one of those pieces which it might seem impossible to play in a way that might surprise the listener. Zehetmair however makes you feel you are listening to a completely new creation. His phrasing, his unique employment of the full range of dynamic and tonal possibilities of the instrument, and his extraordinary musicianship make this riveting listening. In particular, the slow movement, so often dulled by soupy vibrato, is arresting from his first entry, and contains one piece of pianissimo playing that can literally take your breath away.

The concerto is paired with the two Romances, which are similarly masterpieces of communicative music making. Bruggen's work with the orchestra is the perfect foil for Zehetmair's solo playing. It's rare to hear such evident pleasure in music making. Buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent performance, shame about the sound, 20 Nov 2007
By P. Hope "paulhope10" (Worcestershire) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Zehetmair's is undoubtedly one of the finest performances of this work in the catalogue. His playing is imaginative, yet unmannered, and he has excellent support from the Orchestra of the 18th Century under Bruggen. Tempi are generally brisk, but not disconcertingly so. If, in the first movement, he tends to emphasise the martial elements in the music, he does so without sacrificing too much of its lyrical quality. And that lyrical quality is abundantly evident in the beautiful slow movement.

It is a shame that, for once, the Philips engineers let the side down with a recording that sounds disappointingly thin. Period instruments may have a lighter sound, but this seems unnaturally tinny. It is noticeably worse in the concerto - the Romances are much better recorded. The sound is not bad enough to ruin the listening experience, but it certainly takes the shine off it. Nevertheless, it is well worth having in your collection alongside a more traditional reading (Hilary Hahn's account would be my choice).

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and alive, 17 Nov 2008
I share the opinions of another of the reviewers here - this really is a performance that makes you listen to the work afresh. I found it most beautiful and lyrical and very very alive. Highly recommended.
