Amazon.co.uk Review
Phillipe Zdar (one of the most important figures in late-1990s French music; as half of Motorbass, he made the classic Pansoul) brings something new to the now-familiar Paris sound--a touch of speed garage. It's nothing too heavy--slightly dubby house is still the plat du jour--but Zdar, with new collaborator Boombass, quickens the pace, and in doing so offers a new perspective on the most musically fashionable city of the 1990s. In doing so, the Cassius duo drop a lot of the cool in favour of just having fun. The title track, with its relentless "sunshine!" sample, hums with optimism and warmth. "Feelings For You" achieves the same effect--a happy-go-lucky sincerity that creates a great party album. --Charlie Porter

Description
Producers Boombass and Philippe Zdar might not be householdnames, but you have probably heard the work of these two Parisian geniuses without even realising it. Combining hip-hopbeats with house music production values, 1999 is an exercise in genre blurring. It's impossible to put the songs into one category, as they include everything possible, all with the avowed intention of making you move. Recorded in an unusually short period of time (three weeks), the album mixes funk-filled tracks with the energy that Philippe brought back from his storming DJ sets at Paris clubs like Respect and the South London deep-house drunkfests Basment Jaxx and Scaramanga. The album is deep with fresh, innovative yet retro-style tracks that bristle with life from the start. 1999 was built to last long past the millennium.

3.0 out of 5 stars Urm...right...OK, 23 Jan 2004
Two words, HIT and MISS. There are some belting tracks on here like 'Cassius 1999'(and the remix)'Feeling For You' and 'Foxxy' and there are some tracks that I think are classed as "fillers".

Like all good french house groups Cassius are a duo Zdar and Boombass (nether of which have anything to do with Daft Punk or Stardust, as other reviewers would have you beleive) but Cassius are no Daft Punk. They are more like Superfunk (more french house) in that they have the ability to make some great tracks but also some fairly duff ones, unfortunately in equal meassures.

Not bad but not great. Buy Daft Punk 'Homework' instead. If you already have 'Homework' see if a mate has Cassius and try to borrow it off them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fresh French disco longplayer, 11 Dec 2002
It's always a challenge making a house music long-player, even tougher when consisting mainly of funky French disco. So are the two men of Cassius (one of which is half the Daft Punk duo, and somehow one-third Stardust if my Parisian math is correct) up to the task?

Mostly yes. Over 16 tracks (!) the hits come early, such as "Feeling For You," and follow a devised formula: choice vocal sample, mid-tempo disco groove, and enough quirky funk to keep things flowing. In fact, not even these elements are needed in songs like "Foxxy" and "La Mouche" which survive off the strength of a swirling beat.

As skillfully produced as the numbers are, this sound is hard to sustain, and indistinguishable filler tracks like "Crazy Legs" and "Planetz," do creep in. Hang around for the "Cassius 99 Remix" at the end, and shuffle the album in with a few others when listening to fully appreciate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the remixes, 6 Jun 2000
By A Customer
I absolutely loved all the remixes of Cassius tracks such as "La Mouche" (by DJ Falcon), "Feeling For You" (by Les Rythmes Digitales) and "Casiuss '99" that were available on the singles, but was slightly (and only slightly) disappointed with this album. It's a lot darker than the remixes, although it's still a work of genius. If you haven't heard any of the remixes, you will absolutely love this. Funky, clever and anthemic
