5.0 out of 5 stars A great recording of a great performance., 22 Dec 2000
By A Customer
I bought this having forgotten just how good the sound is, and how wonderful the performances. Beecham manages to convey the pleasure he obviously had in conducting this music, and he is well served in his orchestra - an absolutely marvalous first violin in the Scheherazade!

If I have a doubt, it is in the use of so English a sounding chorus - but, they know what they are singing and they mean it!

This is Beecham at his best, and EMI capturing it well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scheherajazz Plus, 7 Nov 2007
By Walter Mirauer "WalterM" (Halifax UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Given that this is my absolute favourite piece of romantic classical music and that, untutored, I can NEARLY play it on the piano, this Beecham recording remains for me unsurpassed. It cost me four weeks' pocket money when I bought it on vinyl on first release and the joy and exuberance of this consummate performance persists to this day. Everybody, the conductor, the orchestra, the soloist (outstanding, by the way), the sound engineers at EMI, probably even the sleeve designer, had a good day, which all makes this a recording to treasure, to return to when downcast by a grey day, or oppressed by life's negatives. The only rendition which runs it close (and from a similar era) is by Paul Kletzki, which, at the time, EMI wisely released on a cut-price label. One of the greatest recordings ever made.
