5.0 out of 5 stars psychedelia with wit and style, 26 Nov 1999
By roger.irving@tesco.net (Marshchapel, Grimsby, Lincs) - See all my reviews
As a regular reader of 'Record Collector' I have been following their recent series on Sixties psychedelia with interest. I was particularly intrigued by the double page spread in the most recent issue which focussed on a band I had never heard of called Rainbow Ffolly, and their sole LP 'Sallies Fforth'. I have never been a big fan of this type of music (I walked out on a Pink Floyd gig in about 1968 at Durham University after 20 minutes because I found it tedious!) but having taken a gamble and ordered the CD from Amazon, one play and I was amazed by what I was hearing. You can tell the many influences that have contributed to the overall sound (the Beatles being the most obvious) but originality shines through, as does a sense of fun which gently laughs at the pretentiousness of much of the music of that period. All the tracks are enjoyable and the little links between them add to the amusement. I refuse to single out any one in particular but if any further recommendation is needed my 16 year old daughter fell for it immediatly, made her own copy and goes round singing 'They'm' which she finds hilarious. Wherever Rainbow Ffolly are now, can I say a very belated thank you - its a pity you didn't produce anything else!
