Mogwai return to top form after their previous 'burn-out' album Come On Die Young, with this briliant collection of tunes. Stanley Kubrick is one of Mogwais best, featuring an organ drone, and a beautiful slide guitar, with cut up speech floating in the background. 'Christmas song' is not 'Christmas steps', and is no way related, but is still great. But the moments everyone wants, are the loud parts, and on 'Rage:man', 'rollerball' and 'Burn girl prom queen' all explode with that mogwai distortion we all love, but it is more controlled, in the style of 'christmas steps', rather than the pummeling distortion of 'mogwai fear satan'. 'Small children in the background' is the epic closer, emerging from hissing static with its wistful acoustic guitar parts, then suddenly exploding tsunami size distortion, then vanishing again as quickly as at appeared, leaving the last few minuites fading slowly out, while you recover from the shock. Definitly a must have for mogwai fans. Pure class as usual.
