Denise Duval, the original Blanche. What can I say? This is as close to the original concept which so nearly destroyed Francis Poulenc as it is possible to get. Here we have a somewhat frivolous composer, and that's not such a bad thing, but writing a highly serious opera about nuns, the revolution, fear and failure. Heavy. The music is a kind of French apocalyptic Wagner. The little motifs whizz around tickling your tear ducts, and you will have gained attachments to several of them by the end of the first scene. Poulenc takes fairly routine gestures, a closure here, a gear-change there, and turns them into the spirits of the characters. The brother, the father, both tragic in their bourgeois way, the father le marquis mistreating his servants and yet trying to appear to understand the working class in his condescending self-satisfied way and the brother occupied with family life, not caring a jot that his empire is about to fall. Sister Constance, definately one to adore - the classic Christian who's more supersitious than straight religious, very friendly and lovable, very humble and by the end very dead. The old prioress, easily my personal favourite, trying desperately to be hard yet it's so obvious she's the tenderest soul in the whole world. You'll love her, but hey - she dies of cancer in agonising pain and curses God. And sister Blanche - I can hear the sevenths sounding as I even type her name. My God, you'll live this character. I very nearly had my name changed to Sister Blanch of The Agony of Christ when I first became obsessed with this opera, and if you think I'm strange, buy the CD - I guarantee you'll contemplate it!! Oh yes, nearly forgot, the guillotine scene... A group of nuns go to their death on the guillotine singing the Salve Regina. Wow. Double Wow. If this don't move ya nothin will.
