Product Description
Description
This set provides an overview of Beefheart's output from UNCONDITIONALLY GUARANTEED onward. It ranges from the final attempt at commercialising his vision on BLUEJEANS & MOONBEAMS( after which Beefheart took a several year retreat from performing and recording) to the gorgeous complexities of "Sheriff of Honk Kong". Additionally, "Light Reflected Off the Oceands [sic] Of the Moon" is included, previously available only on a 12" released concurrently with his last album, ICECREAM FOR CROW. For anyone curious about exactly what Captain Beefheart did after CLEAR SPOT, this collection affords aintriguing nineteen-song tour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing album, 19 Aug 2003
Don't let the Beefheart purists spoil your fun! His two mid 70's virgin albums contained some amazing moments and provide a fascinating insight when compared with his less commercial music

About half this album is from this era, which typically contain beautifully crafted lyrics and music, love songs and harmonic, long lasting dreamy guitar solos...

The other half of the album presents Beefhearts alternative side, taken from various later albums. The experimental rythmns and free form lyrics that make Beefheart an underground hero are all presented here

To add to all this, between some of the tracks they have inserted short spoken word monologs, some of these are funny, some are serious but all add to the magical feel of the album

This is a very good introduction to the music of Captain Beefheart. OK so it doesn't contain any of his earlier more bluesy songs, or anything from the experimental Trout Mask Replica album, but it's the perfect introduction to his later work

I would definately recommend this album as an introduction to Beefheart, so long as people realise his earlier songs aren't on this album. For his 60's work you can't beat the Electricity compilation album!

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid! Buy "Safe as Milk" instead!, 8 Mar 2001

With eight selections from the two "Tragic Band" albums ("Bluejeans & Moonbeams" & "Unconditionally Guaranteed") you know that this is just a poor selection from the later Virgin albums and not any kind of greatest hits of Captain Beefheart (greatest misses in his case). So for anyone thinking of dipping their toe into Beef music, well, "The Dust Blows Forward" is a better anthology, but for goodness sake, just get "Safe as Milk" or "Shiny Beast" and have done with it! You won't be disappointed, I promise - but you will if you buy this one.
