Amazing album, 18 Aug 2003
Don't let the Beefheart purists spoil your fun! His two mid 70's virgin albums contained some amazing moments and provide a fascinating insight when compared with his less commercial musicAbout half this album is from this era, which typically contain beautifully crafted lyrics and music, love songs and harmonic, long lasting dreamy guitar solos... The other half of the album presents Beefhearts alternative side, taken from various later albums. The experimental rythmns and free form lyrics that make Beefheart an underground hero are all presented here To add to all this, between some of the tracks they have inserted short spoken word monologs, some of these are funny, some are serious but all add to the magical feel of the album This is a very good introduction to the music of Captain Beefheart. OK so it doesn't contain any of his earlier more bluesy songs, or anything from the experimental Trout Mask Replica album, but it's the perfect introduction to his later work I would definately recommend this album as an introduction to Beefheart, so long as people realise his earlier songs aren't on this album. For his 60's work you can't beat the Electricity compilation album!
