5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect reminder of the live shows..., 10 Dec 2002
By S. Johnston "the_jossman" (Oxford, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having been to see Jools at one of his live gigs, I felt obliged to review this upbeat CD by the genial musician. As with other reviewers, I believe this is the CD to take home and bring back the electricity of his performance. In fact, some of the tracks (e.g. "Dr. Jazz", Maybe I Need Her" are also recorded from live performances, which heavily influenced me to go and see Jools at a live gig.

The mellow "Tranquil Passage" is followed by the fast-paced "Beatroute" that gets the party atmosphere going. This is closely followed "I'm Gone", featuring vocals by Paul Weller, seems to capture the 'boogie' spirit, "Well Alright", "Dr. Jazz" and "Skin the Cat" keeps the action moving later in the CD. the mellower tracks such as "Temple Bar" also deserve their place on this highly credible CD. Some British listeners will also recognise the track "I Wish I Knew How It Felt To Be Free", the theme from the BBC's "Film 2002".

A CD can never do justice to a live performance, but this probably is the next best thing. Five out of five!

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for those who want to remember the gigs...., 4 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Most of us know Holland from his all-too-frequent TV appearances, but he tours continuously as well. With his 17/18 piece Rhythm and Blues 'Orchestra' (no strings), they play an average of two shows a week, all year round. This album is a fair summary of what you get at the shows - without the ringing in the ears!

The piano and brass musicianship is without peer in the modern arena. A fine mixture of blues, boogie-woogie, jazz and pub piano are contrasted with some of the best individual brass solos you'll hear outside of a jazz club. The vocal contributions of Paul Weller, Ruby Turner and Sam Brown all add to the variety.

And if you want more, get to one of those gigs ......... you won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars This CD proves why Jools Holland is the King of Boogie!, 11 Jul 2000
By carparker@hotmail.com (Nottinghamshire, England) - See all my reviews
After seeing Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra Live twice, I felt that it was only polite to make an effort to purchase some of his material. After initially listening to his 'Best Of' album I was not disappointed!

This collection of fine rhythm and blues jazz music is an essential part of any music lovers CD collection. The genius of Jools Holland is displayed in a variety of different styles and his versatile piano ability is surely one of this country's unsung musical treasures. The CD is best appreciated, and certainly sounded the best to me when played continuously.

The highlights of the CD were, amongst others, 'Birdcage Walk' and 'Skin The Cat'. Both tracks were brilliantly arranged and remained the listener of the excellence of not only Mr. Holland himself, but also his fabulous orchestra. The fact that some of the tracks on this album were actually recorded live makes you want to boogie that little bit more!
