Virtually alone among post-symphonic progressive rock groups, Univers Zero perfected a dark, complex chamber-rock soundin the '80s. After a layoff of 13 years, during which the group's fans had to satisfy themselves with post-rockers likeRachel's and Labradford, Univers Zero returns with an albumthat more than lives up the band's former glories. Roger Trigaux departed to form the decidedly more guitar-based, evendarker (!) Present, and THE HARD QUEST is consequently evenless rock-oriented than previous releases. This serves these elegant, baroque-tinged instrumental compositions just fine. As usual, excellent use is made of the counterpoint between woodwinds and keyboards (never has a synthesizer sounded less electronic), and the knotty compositions journey through a variety of moods, all equally satisfying. THE HARD QUESTproves that even at the cusp of the millennium, there's still life in "progressive" music.
