Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Though the American alternative country scene has provided a disproportionate number of reasons to believe that American rock, after grunge, is not completely dead in the water, it can also become hidebound by its adherence to the traditions it was founded on. The truly great bands from this sector--Sparklehorse, Lambchop--have shown a willingness to introduce a certain feral modernism into proceedings, and Shivaree, from Virginia via California, merit serious comparison with either of them.

Shivaree are a three-piece revolving around the singing and songwriting of the truly fantastically named Ambrosia Parsley, who clearly thinks as highly of Jane Siberry and Mary Margaret O'Hara as she ever did of Patsy Cline or Margo Timmins. The songs on I Oughtta Give You A Shot In The Head... are oblique, meandering, but insidiously tuneful creations which lapse into Sheryl Crow territory once or twice (specifically, "Daring Lousy Guy" and "Pimp") but are mostly arrestingly great. It is to be hoped there will be much more where this fine debut came from. --Andrew Mueller

4.0 out of 5 stars Unusual and sweet, 6 Jan 2004
By A Customer
Goodnight Moon is the track that stands out and I love it, but the whole album is great. The tracks are very varied, some being so weird they make you laugh, like the first track which sounds like a nursery rhyme ending in a kiss! Ambrosia Parsley's (the singer) voice is childlike, being sweetly sexy, and the lyrics are imaginative. The songs are melodic but complex enough that you don't get tired of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars If only pop music was more like Shivarees music!, 19 Oct 2008
By Mr. F. Beckett - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I discovered Shivaree through the Kill Bill soundtrack, which had Goodnight Moon on it. Having loved that track so much in every single way and playing it over and over I had to have more. So I got the album and eagerly waited by the front door for it to come so I could get it to my CD player ASAP (seriously)!

I was disappointed.. It's not that the album isn't good, it's just that Goodnight Moon is one of the best songs that I've ever heard, and being like I am, I expected the whole album to be like this. However, as I gradually played the rest of the album more and more, I've started to enjoy at least half of the tracks almost as much as Goodnight Moon. As for the others, I personally feel they lack some venom, but maybe in time I will like them as much too.

The music itself is pretty unique. She really has a great voice that just cuts through the mix, and although it's not a very special one, it goes hand in hand with the music!

The sound engineering and production on the album is very good too!

3.0 out of 5 stars Discovering Shivaree, 3 May 2005
By A Customer
Having been told that Shivaree were a like a mixture of Catatonia, Morcheeba and countless other female artists, I thought it was worth a shot. Ambrosia's voice is amazingly versatile, for me, Goodnight Moon is without doubt the best track on the album, and although the rest is good, none of it quite matches the class of that one. Planning to get Who's Got Trouble next though so they're definately growing on me...
