Amazon.co.uk Review
Though the American alternative country scene has provided a disproportionate number of reasons to believe that American rock, after grunge, is not completely dead in the water, it can also become hidebound by its adherence to the traditions it was founded on. The truly great bands from this sector--
Sparklehorse,
Lambchop--have shown a willingness to introduce a certain feral modernism into proceedings, and Shivaree, from Virginia via California, merit serious comparison with either of them.
Shivaree are a three-piece revolving around the singing and songwriting of the truly fantastically named Ambrosia Parsley, who clearly thinks as highly of Jane Siberry and Mary Margaret O'Hara as she ever did of Patsy Cline or Margo Timmins. The songs on I Oughtta Give You A Shot In The Head... are oblique, meandering, but insidiously tuneful creations which lapse into Sheryl Crow territory once or twice (specifically, "Daring Lousy Guy" and "Pimp") but are mostly arrestingly great. It is to be hoped there will be much more where this fine debut came from. --Andrew Mueller
