Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
With other members of the Wu-Tang Clan--Method Man, Raekwon, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Ghostface Killah and RZA--having already stepped out from under the Clan's hugely successful shadow to score major solo hits, it was only a matter of time before U-God came forward to claim his piece of the solo action. And as well respected as his lyrical flows on the Clan's tunes are, few could have guessed just what an awesome debut it would be. U-God, aka Golden Arms, has taken his time, left other Wu-members to build the hype and spent a year putting together some seriously arresting cuts. Together with the Clan's production supremo, RZA, he's concocted a funk-fuelled catalogue of up-lifting bass rumbles, tight and oppressive drum loops, 1970s horn samples and dark cop-show grooves to run against his raw, uncompromising rhymes. His choice of backing for "Soul Dazzle" and "Shell Shock" might be chilled and laid back, but his lyrical assaults are anything but. Golden Arms Redemption is U-God's chance to show the world that he's more than just another rapper from the Clan, and with a truck load of eloquent rhymes, flawless tunes and the occasional harrowing tension builder ("Glide" and "Lay Down", in both atmosphere and content, are just frightening), he's done exactly that. --Dan Gennoe

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly the most determined wu-member!, 13 Mar 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Golden Arms Redemption (Audio CD)
Out of all of the Wu-tang clan, the one member to have been ignored (besides Masta Killa) has been U-God. This album is crisp, new, absolutely brilliant. And differs from other Wu-solo albums by not being completely produced by The RZA. Not to diss the RZA, but it's good to see someone try something new. Leatha face makes appearances on a few tracks but has dissapointingly failed to release anything himself. I eagerly await CD's from him, Remedy, The Beggaz and Ruthless Bastards.

so, in summary, buy this album! Start your Wu-solo collection here and spiral out towards Rebel Ins, Meth, Cappadonna etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 25 Jun 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Golden Arms Redemption (Audio CD)
This album is brilliant, it features other Wu related artists such as, Inspectah Deck, Raekwon, Hell Raizah, Method Man etc. It's definately worth getting, all the lyrics and the beats on the album are excellent, they are developed by the best producers and engineers. However I am not surprised. I knew Baby U would do it. I can't wait for the next Lucky Arms Album!

2.0 out of 5 stars A really poor effort, 20 Feb 2003

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Golden Arms Redemption (Audio CD)
This release really seems to have divided opinion. Much of the music press slated it as yet another below-par Wu release, but many of the Wu faithful suggested that it was an overdue return to form. Unfortunately, given U-God’s talent, I have to side with the press on this one.

In what is sadly becoming something of a trend the majority of the album sounds rushed; the likes of ‘Dat’s Gangsta’, ‘Lay Down’ and ‘Hungry’ are extremely tepid for a member of the Wu. Despite the LP carrying his name, U-God isn’t solely to blame for this, one of the posse tracks, 'Rumble', is actually one of the worst. While Leatha Face, Method Man and Inspectah Deck do inject much needed emotion and passion into proceedings, the song possesses a truly awful chorus, “Rage, rock, roll, fight, brawl, fall, RUMBLE.” If the Blazing Squad had written it, you wouldn’t be surprised. It isn’t the last time that U-God is caught short in the lyrics department. Worse still is found on ‘Stay In Your Lane’ where U-God, in what must be a first for a hip hop record, actually uses the line, “The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain.”

Fortunately there are moments where U-God shows signs of the talent that brought him to the game in the first place. ‘Turbulence’ gives the album a good start. True Master does his best impersonation of Rza’s production style mixing heavy bass with trademark Wu strings. Elsewhere, the first single ‘Bizarre’ is a decent slab of upbeat hip hop and ‘Shell Shock’ carries the attitude one associates with the Wu.

U-God’s biggest problem is that he seems utterly unemotional on every track. While his contemporaries; Method Man, ODB, Ghostface Killah etc have managed to carve their own niche within the Wu universe, U-God just doesn’t sound interesting enough for the listener to bother hearing. Sadly it is this coupled with the childish lyrics and uninspired production that make this album completely disappointing.

Judging by the other reviews posted here, a lot of people have a lot of good to say about this LP. However, ‘Golden Arms Redemption’ did not do anything for this reviewer. Wu completists should give it a listen, but there are far, far better albums carrying the Wu name out there for the uninitiated.
