Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

What's the soundtrack for suburbia gone awry? Perhaps it's American Beauty--the music for the dark Sam Mendes-directed flick starring Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening. With its mix of classic and indie rock, the disc seems to reflect something for everyone (or at least those found in middle America). Bobby Darin's "Don't Rain On My Parade" is the epitome of unhip, Free's "All Right Now" is a classic rock anthem we've heard way too many times and Peggy Lee's "Bali Ha'i" is vintage exotica at its best. But then there are some surprises: Elliott Smith's harmonising "Because" is pure Brian Wilson, Folk Implosion's "Free To Go" is one of the group's best tracks and Eels' "Cancer For The Cure" is a gritty but infectious taste of alt-rock. Thomas Newman's percussive "Dead Already" creates a tense mood to start things off. --Jason Verlinde

1.0 out of 5 stars If you want more than pop songs, don't buy this, 24 Feb 2000
By brendan@brandinc.ie (Dublin, Ireland) - See all my reviews
If you want the fabulous music that Thomas Newman composed for the movie, then you don't want this album. You actually want "American Beauty: Original Motion Picture Score"... That features all the fabulously lusty percussive rythms and melancholic piano chords that made the cinematic experience so special.

5.0 out of 5 stars a soundtrack of unlimited beauty, 15 Jan 2001
By A Customer
I felt compelled to write this review after reading the bland, unconstructive criticism of the other reviews. Yes, perhaps you should buy the original score if you want to OD on Thomas Newman's haughting but exceptional incidental music, but the diversity of this soundtrack echoes the aims of the movie. From the classic rock of Free to the indie brilliance of Gomez through the unnerving beauty of Elliot Smith, each track conjures images of one of the greatest insights into modern (American) suburbia, and defines each characters taste and aspirations.

If you enjoyed every second of the movie and you're a true music fan, you'll love this CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good selection, marred by omission....., 27 Feb 2001
By A Customer
My favourite use of song in the film is the scene where Lester sings along to 'American Woman' in his car while smoking a joint - middle-aged rebellion at it's best! So why on earth has that particular song been left off this compilation? Totally spoils the whole CD for me. The same song had a great scene in 'Cable Guy' with Jim Carrey doing karoake to it - did it make the Cable Guy soundtrack I wonder?
