Product Description

CD Description
SOMETHING TO WRITE HOME ABOUT, the Get Up Kids' second full-length album, has all the elements of a perfect emo record--catchy pop hooks, revving guitars, and confessional lyrics about confusion, alienation, and loss. The angst and need atthe centre of this music lends SOMETHING TO WRITE HOME ABOUT an aura of youthful naivete, but the Get Up Kids have the songcraft, focus, and sincerity to back it up, giving them the edge on many of their contemporaries.
The sweet yearning expressed in the near-ballad "Valentine", for example, isdisarming, as is the introspective travelogue on the piano/acoustic-guitar duet "Out of Reach". But even when the Get Up Kids crank it up--which they do with convincing passion oncuts like "Ten Minutes" and "Holiday", the album's opener--their winning vulnerability shines through. "The Company Dime", with its Fender Rhodes piano and arpeggiated guitars, shows the Get Up Kids capable of spinning interesting textures, too, one of several pleasant surprises on this fine sophomore release.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Of The Most Explosive Wonders You'll Never Hear, 6 Sep 2000
By A Customer
Too easily compared to Green Day,Blink 182, and the likes of Dumdums and such, this Americana band is worthy of much higher praise than any of the forementioned and yet they don't sell half as well. But such is life and the infuriating modern publics view that we get to keep this treasure for ourselves. Beginning with the rip-roaring opener that is 'holiday' the get up kids second official album could easily be judged straight off as a typical american grunge band. But beyond it's obvious single tinged melodies lies incredible depth that is more prominant with tunes like 'valentine' and 'i'll catch you' but is also visible in every single song on the album.

For once a loud, commercial grunge band has been brave enoough to experiment where others simply stick to routine. There is a loss of all the pubescant whinings of normal garage bands and a sudden realization for the quieter things in life. Lush acoustic guitars pull through the straining electrics, a full orchestra pushes its face up against the strong vocals and a lonely piano can be known to pull in through the noisey clamour to be left alone-humming to itself. Not many others are brave enough to do such things and especially none too brave to 'spoil' ( or 'make') such punkoramas as 'holiday' by buckling into a quiet line for the chorus.

The Get Up Kids are only on there second record and yet they show a maturity rarely seen in this field of music. One can only wonder as to how breathtaking there next album will be...

( if you like The Get Up Kids already and need something else to quench your thirst try out The Ataris, Nada Surf, or the indespensible WEEZER. )

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing. Reflective. Brilliant Emotion, 5 Dec 2004
I bought this album having seen the claims on Amazon of it being the best and most emotional album in the world.'We'll see about that' I thought but..WOW! This album is amazing at first the brilliance of the songs hits you but the interesting nature of the emotional lyrics is the most refreshing and worthwhile aspect of this album. The lyrics mostly deal with moving on after a break-up so frequent is this theme that the album borders on being a concept album but nevertheless it is worth your money, if you like emo or punk it is worth a try some of you will love it.
