A superb record, 13 Dec 2001
Be warned, this record is unlike anything Dead Can Dance released, with the exception of Perry's three tracks on the live 'Toward The Within'. In fact, those tracks are a good yardstick on which to judge the appeal of this disc. If you like those tracks, then you'll love this. The tracks contained on this record are beautiful mood music, and Perry (a man who sounds disarmingly like both Frank Sinatra and Barry Manilow!) is clearly an admirer of the late Tim Buckley. This album features a cover of 'I Must Have Been Blind' (bit of a 4AD classic, as 'This Mortal Coil' also recorded it), and I've also heard live versions of 'Song to the Siren' and 'Dolphins'. In fact, one might perhaps describe him as a troubador, a '4AD Tim Buckley'. These recordings are mostly folky songs, elevated above the norm by the typical '4AD' and Dead Can Dance atmosphere that the production hoists on them. They are great songs in their own right, I believe, but the production really builds them into something more than just folk songs - sonic experiences, maybe, at the risk of sounding cliched and pretentious. This is a great record, ideal for late night listening in a dimly lit room, but not ideal for fans of Lisa Gerrard. This album was a long time in being released, but the wait was well worth it. Can't wait for the next one!
