A superb record, 13 Dec 2001
Be warned, this record is unlike anything Dead Can Dance released, with the exception of Perry's three tracks on the live 'Toward The Within'. In fact, those tracks are a good yardstick on which to judge the appeal of this disc. If you like those tracks, then you'll love this. The tracks contained on this record are beautiful mood music, and Perry (a man who sounds disarmingly like both Frank Sinatra and Barry Manilow!) is clearly an admirer of the late Tim Buckley. This album features a cover of 'I Must Have Been Blind' (bit of a 4AD classic, as 'This Mortal Coil' also recorded it), and I've also heard live versions of 'Song to the Siren' and 'Dolphins'. In fact, one might perhaps describe him as a troubador, a '4AD Tim Buckley'. These recordings are mostly folky songs, elevated above the norm by the typical '4AD' and Dead Can Dance atmosphere that the production hoists on them. They are great songs in their own right, I believe, but the production really builds them into something more than just folk songs - sonic experiences, maybe, at the risk of sounding cliched and pretentious. This is a great record, ideal for late night listening in a dimly lit room, but not ideal for fans of Lisa Gerrard. This album was a long time in being released, but the wait was well worth it. Can't wait for the next one!

Brendan Perry's fantastic first solo album, 2 Nov 1999
After the break-up of Dead Can Dance in 1998 this first solo album by Brendan Perry is just about everything you would hope for. The album is a number of haunting tracks, whose instrumentation is not as percussion oriented as some of Perry's vocal excusions were with Dead Can Dance (e.g. Ullysses, Black Sun). The feel is quite similar to his contibutions on the DCD live album, Toward The Within. If you liked that album, you'll love this one.

'It'll end in tears', 18 Oct 2002
It'll end in tears......yes, the title of the first This Mortal Coil album.....and, an album which Brendan Perry contributed to back in the mid eighties. Since that time, along with the 4AD diva Lisa Gerrard, and performing as the Dead Can Dance, he's created some brilliant music. Both he, like Gerrard have beautifully distinctive voices and, since their split, have both gone solo. But her albums are strong and have a noticable DCD vibe to them, unlike this album. This is not an album for fans of the Dead Can Dance because it's very different and doesn't do his voice justice. It's more like 'Eye of the Tiger' and Lisa Gerrard has won the first round.
